Wordless Wednesday (Almost!)

We're going with this week's BlogPaws theme for Wordless Wednesday by featuring a perfectly wonderful adoptable pet, but one that's perhaps less likely to get adopted because of age or special needs.

So may we present nine years young, Boomer, available through the Columbus Dog Connection! (We featured Boomer in our inaugural issue of our newsletter-you can still get a complimentary copy by signing up for our e-mail blasts!)

Boomer is a 35lbs, male, and an exceptional pooch! He's great with dogs and kids, knows commands, loves to be with his person, knows sit, and stay, and even stays with his person on walks! He's a  relaxed, mellow, well mannered fellow who likes to use foster siblings as a pillow and loves exploring the yard.  He's great on leash, too!  If you're interested in adopting Boomer, please call
Ron at (614) 497-0189.

P.S. Remember that today is World Spay Day, so check out the festivities on the Humane Society's website. and enter your pet in the fun photo contest to help contribute to this important cause...and maybe win some cool prizes!

But while you're here, why not enter the BlogPaws Wordless Wednesday Hop and see their featured adoptable pets?

Restaurant Dining With Your Pet...Should You Or Shouldn't You?

Well, that may depend on where you live. But it's certainly good news for dog owners in the Los Angeles area who want to wine and dine with their dogs. LA County pubic health officials announced just yesterday that dogs can now accompany their owners in outdoor dining areas, provided "strict guidelines" are followed.  For instance, the waitstaff can't touch the dogs, and no posing with Fido on the seats, or heaven forbid, the tables. Of course, the restaurant must have a separate entrance for the patio dining area.

Although Parental Unit is a bit of a clean freak, she did enjoy seeing dogs sitting at the feet of the owners in some fine dining establishments in Europe (and watching the waitstaff gracefully step over the snoozing canines while balancing platters laden with food). Although we're not sure about the laws here in Columbus, she has taken me to a few restaurant patios, so it must be legal...

What about in your neck of the woods? Do you enjoy taking your pooch with you when you dine outdoors? Do you think that canines should be allowed inside of restaurants as they are in many parts of Europe? Please let us know-but first check out this video of dogs dining in Italy...salami anyone?

Here Comes The Bride...And Her Four-Legged Ring Bearer

Photo courtesy of Seth Wenig/Associated Press and The New York Times

Think dogs and other pets are officially part of our families these days? Yep, so do we-and this article from a recent New York Times makes it official. We know that when a people are planning both their wedding party and the reception, they tend to be rather picky about who makes the guest list. In fact, we're guessing that some folks even pass on some of their blood relatives when compiling the guest list. But according to a 2011 survey by Brides magazine, "almost 5% of brides include a pet in the wedding party, and its editors estimated that nearly double that amount had pets present during the ceremony and/or reception."

One of the brides-to-be featured in the article won't be carrying a garden bouquet when she strolls down the aisle...she'll be clutching her black bantam hen. "...It's so 'us' ", she claims of her and her groom's choice to include their feathered friend (they have six chickens and are known among their friends and family as chicken aficionados). And the colorful eggs their brood lays will be displayed in centerpiece bowls and eaten in the frittatas served at the party.

And where there's a trend, there are entrepreneurs-in this case, Colleen Paige, an animal behaviorist and founder of the Wedding Dog, a company based in Portland, Oregon, "that preps pets-including potbellied pigs and goats- to participate in weddings for $2,500 and up."

Parental Unit has informed me that if she's lucky enough to ever remarry, she'll definitely invite me to the ceremony and pawty. How about you? Did your pet attend your nuptials or are you planning to tie the knot and include your furry (or feathered) friends? Maybe you've attended a wedding where the four-leggeds among us participated. Let us know! In the meantime, enjoy some of the hilarious scenarios (pets are unpredictable, you know!) in this article.

Cat Saves Owner From Diabetic Seizure

Just hours after a 21 pound cat named Pudding was adopted from the Sturgeon, Wisconsin Humane Society and had barely settled in to his new home, he saved the life of his new owner. Shortly after falling asleep, Amy Jung, who had diabetes since childhood, had a diabetic seizure in her sleep. Pudding first attempted to wake up Amy, then scampered to her son's bedroom and pounced on his bed until he woke up and called for help.

According to this piece in the Huffington Post, Pudding is "now officially registered as a therapy animal and has learned to sit at Jung's feet and meow when he senses her blood sugar is low."

Well Pudding has certainly earned his keep, but we can't say the same for Ms. Bella. We fell for her pretty face and sweet disposition and she needn't do anything more.

Oscar Worthy Scene Stealers...The Four-Legged Variety

Scene from The Artist courtesy of The New York Times

Oh, the tricks of the dog trainer's trade-especially those trainers whose canine clients work in the film industry. Can you say bacon grease and hot dogs?  According to this article in today's New York Times, the film "Beginners" includes a happy reunion between human star and his dog-only the human (in this case, Christopher Plummer) had bacon grease slathered on his face to entice Cosmo, his dog, to enthusiastically lick it, as though wildly happy to see him.

And let's not forget Uggie, the scene-stealer from the silent film, The Artist, and his love of hot dogs. Apparently his trainer went undercover as an extra in the movie, with those hot dogs stuffed in his pocket.

The two animal trainers for these films and others, "both came to their jobs through a love of animals and, especially, the antics of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin..." But brought their unique sensibilities to their client's scenes. For example, the various moves that Uggie used in The Artist, like "falling backwards and playing dead, hiding his head, none of that stuff was in the script," said his trainer, Omar von Muller. "They're my tricks." Pretty amazing, we say.

How many of you think there should be a separate Oscar category for animals and their trainers? Let us know!

A Story Of Pet Loss Beautifully Told

We ran across this piece on the Huffington Post and were taken with its beautiful writing and heartfelt sentiment. How do we deal with the loss of a pet? Is it "O.K" to feel sad, depressed, angry, heartbroken? And can we cry until we have to put frozen corn dogs on our eyes to ease the swelling, as this woman did after the loss of her beloved cat, Mangia?

The author, Mary K. Moore, takes us on her journey from the emergency room decision to let Mangia go, back through their history together, showing us why her grief was deep and wide. Take a minute to join her on this journey that all pet lovers will inevitably face. You'll be glad you did.

Underwater Pet Photography: A Refreshing Perspective

Photo courtesy of Seth Casteel's Facebook Page.

If you haven't seen these photos of dogs playing underwater, you're missing a refreshing perspective on our canine companions. Just ask professional photographer, Seth Casteel, whose website has been inundated with requests for his latest photographic adventure: capturing dogs playing, or doing whatever it is they do, underwater. Some of these photos "went viral" at the beginning of February and the attention subsequently crashed his site. He's not sure what hit a nerve with pet lovers around the globe, but he thinks it might have had "something to do with the range of emotion that came out in the photos-'a side of dogs that people haven't seen before.' "

Whatever that special something is, we'll just say they're super cool.. Would you like to see photos of your dog underwater? Let us know!

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I'll play on terra firma for now.

Did you know that February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, and culminates in World Spay Day on February 28? This annual campaign  of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International shines a spotlight on spaying and neutering as a way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be killed on the street or euthanized in a shelter.

To support World Spay Day, the HSUS and HSI host the Spay Day Pet Photo Contest which is a fun way to celebrate our pets while raising funds for spaying and neutering-and there's an opportunity to win great prizes, too! It's simple to enter: just submit your favorite photo of your pet along with a few lines of relevant information about you and your best furfriend and you're all set. You can even enter directly on Facebook and upload a photo from your Facebook albums.

The Golden Collar Awards-Uggie Is Top Dog!

Uggie lovin' on his trophy.

You might have heard by now that Uggie, that adorable canine star of the Academy Award-nominated film, The Artist, won a Golden Collar award the other night for "Best Dog in a Theatrical Film", beating out several competitors, like Cosmo, from the film. Beginners. You can watch the entire awards ceremony below-the first of what we hope are many, richly deserved awards for dogs and their trainers. The Golden Collar Awards are the brainchild of Dog News Daily, and we think they deserve a hearty "Thank-you"! Enjoy this article from Cesar Way that discusses the awards.

Haute Cousine For Pets: What You Need To Know Now!

Photo Illustration: Bowl by Tony Cenicola, and dog by Fred R. Conrad, The New York Times

"Boeuf Bourguignon Again?" is the title of this witty yet illustrative article in today's New York Times that (sort of) pokes fun at the lengths humans go to please us dogs. Now, we're all for feeding your canine and feline friends the healthiest foods you can afford, whether it's free range chicken and veggies that you cook yourself, or a high quality kibble whose ingredient list you've memorized, analyzed and discussed ad nauseum with your friends (think Parental Unit). But does anyone remember, like, ahem, Parental Unit, when it was socially acceptable for your dog and cat to sleep outside, and most families fed their pets "scraps"? Perish the thought!

Seriously though, this piece does a great job of discussing the why's and wherefore's of the growing niche market for high quality, even gourmet pet foods, and conducts a bonafide taste test of eight premium brands by New York Times staffers (well, really their pets).

According to this article, a recent study of the pet industry "reports that those making more than $100,000 a year increased their share of pet-food spending and now account for about a third of the total market. "[And] these are precisely the health-conscious, label scrutinizing, restaurant-going consumers likely to indulge their cats and dogs at mealtimes,"claims the article's author, whose three cats eagerly participated in the taste test.

These "chef inspired" menus for Fido and Fluffy have actually been around for many years, but the market really took off after the commercial pet food recalls in 2007, "when contaminated gluten and rice protein caused fatal kidney failure in thousands of cats and dogs around the world." (For those of you whose pets became ill or died from eating this contaminated food, we understand that this is not just a bit of historical trivia.)

But we don't think that eating more healthfully and true to both human and other animals' natural instincts is an indulgence or a passing fad-we hope it's here to stay. What do you think, and what do you feed your beloved pet and why? We'd love to know!

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show: Trivia And Tips

What sporting event was held in New York City before the Brooklyn Bridge was built? What is the second oldest, continuously held sporting event in the country (the first is the Kentucky Derby)? If you guessed The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, you get a gold star! But even if you tune in just to see the beautiful dogs prancing around the show ring like we do (more on the recent politics of the event coming later this week), it's helpful to understand some of the basics. According to this article in yesterday's Washington Times,  the total number of dogs entered this year is 2,077, representing each of the 185 breeds and varieties eligible to compete (apparently there are 176 different breeds (the rest are characterized as "varieties") and each has its own 'breed standard" or "blueprint" "that specifies the physical attributes, movement, and character traits" that the dog should possess to do the job humans asked it to do, like herding sheep or burrowing into holes to kill rats.

The dogs who make it to Westminster are all champions of the dog show circuit and have accumulated "points for different levels of wins" from the various shows. At Westminster, as in other dog shows, the preliminary rounds have dogs first compete with their own breed, and one among that breed is chosen as the "best". The winners from each breed then compete in their respective "groups", of which there are seven: Hound, Toy, Nonsporting, Herding, Sporting, Working, and Terrier. The winners from each group then compete in the "Best of Show" judging, where one dog is dubbed "the best", followed by much hugging and crying among the fellow (human) owners and handlers, while the dogs wag their tails and get extra treats.

Tonight's telecast will feature live judging of the Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups, and of course, the Best in Show. (We love those terriers!)  Let us know your thoughts-we'd love to hear!

Years Of Campaigning (And Grooming) Precede Westminster Entrants

Photo courtesy of  Fred R. Conrad for The New York Times

We thought this article in today's online version of The New York Times shed an interesting light on the behind the scenes work (and money) that goes into showing dogs, especially those canines and their humans that make it to Westminster. The campaigning, often compared to the "wave of advertisements and screenings before the Academy Awards", can cost tens of thousands of dollars and involve "multicity tours and splashy spreads in trade publications." Who knew that a full page add on the inside cover of a trade publication like Dog News costs $1800?

But the article takes great pains to stress that some owners spend "next to nothing" on their campaigns, and according to the Westminster judges interviewed, "From a judging point of view, it makes no difference...your job is to judge the dogs as you see them that day..."

Of course, that's what the studios, directors, producers and actors say too-that the final voting is strictly on the merits. What do you think?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch in Ohio...how do you think I'd go over in a "trade publication"?

Westminster Champion Dachshunds Work As Therapy Dogs Outside The Ring

The famed Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is right around the corner: tune in for prime time coverage, live from Madison Square Garden, on both Monday, February 13 from 8-9 p.m. on the USA Network and 9-11 pm on CNBC, and Tuesday February 14 from 8-11 p.m. on the USA Network. All times are EST. The Best in Show competition starts at 10:30 pm on Valentine's night, so save some of your celebratory chocolate for cuddling on the couch with your best canine buddy and watching some of the most beautiful representatives of dog breeds in the world strut their stuff.

But until then, we're thrilled to bring you excerpts from a conversation we had just yesterday with a breeder of champion Dachshunds, Valerie Diker, who's been breeding and loving these hound favorites for 21 years, and has two Westminster "Best of Breeds" to date:  Richard in 2007 and Jessie in 2009. This year she has two of her beloved Dachshunds competing at Westminster : Uno and Red Rum, the son of Richard. If you're lucky enough to be at the show, watch for them Monday at noon in Ring 2!

Mrs. Diker with some of her champions. Photo courtesy of dikerdachs.com

As with many owner/breeders, Mrs. Diker doesn't personally show her dogs, but she has employed the same handlers for her entire breeding career, Mark and Pam Desrosiers, to show all of her dogs. And of course, they'll be in the ring this year with Uno and Red Rum. Mrs. Diker chooses to keep her dogs on the show circuit for only two years, and upon their "retirement" (many times as the number one Dachshund in the country), she has a second career planned for her champions: that of therapy dog.
"It's [her] strong opinion that retired show dogs have a future, and it's not on the couch-they have a job to do!" She believes that show dogs have the perfect personality to be therapy dogs because they're already used to being around a lot of people, hearing a lot of different noises, and of course, not responding inappropriately. And Mrs. Diker should know-she's already trained three of her past champions as therapy dogs.

Red Rum will be retiring after his Westminster competition this year and will train for therapy work-most likely with children. Mrs. Diker loves the idea of bringing her dogs into schools to help improve children's reading (the students aren't afraid to make mistakes when reading to a dog), and to working with autistic children, who are more likely to open up and talk with a dog, rather than people. But she says that there's "such a vast and different audience for therapy dogs, and it's up to the orientation of the owner what group to work with." In fact, she entreats her fellow retiring Westminster entrants to think about therapy training and work for their dog. And in more expansive terms, Mrs. Diker firmly believes that "It's the responsibility of breeders, and pet owners in general, to care about the broader universe of animals." She's becoming more involved with working to ban puppy mills and encouraging pet supply stores to provide adoption opportunities from local shelters rather than selling puppies.

And perhaps most importantly, Mrs Diker has recently been on the receiving end of some therapy dog love-she was being wheeled out from a week-long stay in the hospital, when she noticed a Golden Retriever with a "working dog" orange jacket, and she learned from the owner that he was indeed a therapy dog. Meanwhile, the pooch immediately put his head in her lap and allowed her to stroke him-she was so comforted by seeing and touching this dog, that she "felt immeasurably better." We can't help but think that petting a dog (any dog, really) makes us all feel immeasurably better!

We'd like to extend a hearty thank-you to Mrs. Diker for taking her time to chat with us during what must be a frenzied time, and we wish her, the Desrosiers, Uno and Red Rum the best of luck tomorrow!

Animals In Art And Literature...In A New York Minute

Courbet's "Hunting Dogs With Dead Hare" (1857), Metropolitan Museum of Art. Photo courtesy of The New York Times

There's a marvelous article in today's NewYork Times that chronicles the canine-from mutts to purebreds-along with other various and sundry animals immortalized in New York art collections. The above photograph of a painting by Courbet is one of thousands of examples revealed in a search by the article's author, Randy Kennedy, to uncover the riches of New York "as a dog art town." Kennedy can't help but mention that the timing of his search coincides with the opening on Monday of the 136th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and with a "menagerie of an exhibition" that opens March 2 at the Morgan Library & Museum, "In the Company of Animals: Art. Literature and Music at the Morgan." This show explores animals in art, music and poetry from 3000 B.C. to the present, and our deep relationship with the creatures who have served and loved us-and we them.

Take the time to travel through history and see how great artists have interpreted our complex relationship with other animals. We hope you enjoy this article and the magnificent slide show that accompanies it.

By the way, stay tuned for more about Westminster on Sunday, when we bring you an exclusive interview with a participant!)

Two Smart Pups Get Emergency Room Help

Some stories just make your heart sing, and we think this is one of them. It was reported on the Huffington Post just yesterday that two young dogs-malnourished and in need of medical care-walked themselves to a (human) hospital emergency room in Corpus Christi, Texas, quietly walked in the front door and waited patiently for help.

Here's a photo of one of the emaciated pups who received treatment from the hospital's kind staff.

After receiving some kind of basic medical care at the human hospital, a local TV station transported the canines to the Gulf Coast Humane Society, where they'll be nursed back to health and eventually ready for adoption. We think (and hope) that these super-smart pups will have no trouble getting a good home...

Providing For Yor Pets After You're Gone

Photo courtesy of Alyson Martin & The New York Times

"Movies are one of the three things that keep people awake in the dark, the other two being boogeymen, and debates about which pet to include in the inheritance."
Groupon advertisement for discounted movie tickets.

Groupon's humor and timing were impeccable in this case, because we received this inventive pitch for AMC Theater movie tickets just after we read a post on The New York Times Health and Wellness Blog discussing the importance of securing a caretaker for your pet in the event you predecease Fido or Fluffy.

In fact, this piece recommends a document called a "pet trust" if at all possible, that specifies exactly where and with whom your beloved pets will live and provides money for their care. It also describes some vivid, if not depressing examples of what can happen if provision for your pets' care is not properly planned: the caregiver who verbally agreed to care for your pet reneges on the promise and sends your beloved companion to a shelter, and/or the designated caregiver is just too overwhelmed with the responsibility to follow through, among a myriad of other factors that can come between your pets' named caregiver and the actual care giving.

Although pet trusts are not recognized in all states, leaving instructions for the care of your pet in a will doesn't always work either-your will can state how property will be dispersed (yes, we living, breathing, loving creatures are considered nothing but property-akin to a toaster-under the law), but it can't enforce how the pet will be cared for, if at all. Remember: if you inherit an ugly necklace from Aunt Milly, you can choose to drop it in the trash. While it is considered animal cruelty under all state law to abandon an animal in the trash, there's nothing stopping you from taking Aunt Milly's pet to a shelter...with the only reprisal a possible visit from Aunt Milly's angry ghost.

Admittedly, Parental Unit has not officially provided for my care in the case of her early demise, but vows to do that after reading this article. How about you? Have any of you officially provided for the care of your pet in case of your sudden departure? We'd love to know.

Cesar Millan's Show!

I'm going to turn this post over to Parental Unit, since she's the one who was lucky enough to see Cesar Millan's live tour last night (the only canine there was Cesar's dog, Junior, and I hear that he wowed the audience just like Cesar!)

Now, most of you know that I've been a huge fan of the Dog Whisperer for many years now, and I think he's a real game changer-he taught me and millions of others to think in a totally different way about our relationship with our dogs. Although I've benefited from this knowledge, the real winner is Bocci and the other dogs I come into contact with-I've learned to respect dogs (yes, I still call Bocci my furry best friend), for the glorious species that they are, not as an extension of me or like a human companion. So, I do my best to fulfill his needs first-and that starts with lots of exercise, every day-but that's the easy part. For me, it's difficult to consistently set the "rules, boundaries and limitations", i.e., discipline, that I know will benefit him. As Cesar said during the show, "discipline is not punishment", it's more like leadership-and you're in charge of giving your dog the direction and fulfillment he or she craves.

Now let's get to the show!
Here I am arriving at the Palace Theater in downtown Columbus...What? No red carpet?

In an earlier post, we mentioned that a reporter described the audience as roaring with laughter during most of Cesar's show in Providence, Rhode Island, and we couldn't quite figure out why-we knew from his show and interviews that the guy has a good sense of humor, but keeping the audience in stitches for two hours?
Well, I can assure you that there wasn't a dry eye in the house in Columbus either-the audience, including me, howled (you'll pardon the pun) pretty much straight through the program. Who knew that Cesar could expertly do different "voices', both human and dog, and act out all the parts in his stories-from the hyper-excited gal spotting a beautiful Golden Retriever on a walk, to Cesar's first clients, who thought shrieking and hiding their dog in the bathroom were the appropriate response when a visitor (in this case, Cesar) knocked on their door?

But these wildly funny stories told us about ourselves and our sometimes unsteady emotional states, and how we transfer this imbalance to our pets-then claim that it's the dog who is having problems or misbehaving.

Note: We don't have photographs taken during the actual program because, well, we were not supposed to take pictures during the show, and I wanted to respect that rule (although many in the audience were snapping away.) The downside is that we didn't get a photo of Junior, who was joyful throughout. Cesar pretty much let him do what he wanted, with the stage as his boundary. He made his way on several occasions to one of the theater staff standing right against the stage to give his face a good lick, and then gave himself a hearty roll on his back that had the audience cooing in unison.

So here's a picture of the empty stage taken before the show...glad they don't send me on the road, eh?

Although I've watched nearly every episode of Cesar's TV show, read his books, and have read and seen numerous interviews with him, I still learned a lot from this show-somehow the stories he told helped to deepen what I already knew, and gave me renewed energy to put that knowledge into practice. And I think seeing Junior and Cesar interact for those two hours sealed the deal-what a gorgeous relationship-so clearly based on mutual trust, respect and love. Don't we all want that kind of bond with our dogs?
At the end of the program, the audience spontaneously gave Cesar and Junior a well-deserved standing ovation-and they were still laughing!

Here are a few (not very good) photos of Cesar and fans taken at the "meet and greet" after the show.

Cesar with his arms around two fans, and his lovely assistant, Allegra, off to the side.

The woman nearest Cesar on his right in this photo is the mother of one of his employees-her son designs his website and edits the video content for the site. According to his mom, he loves his job!

And last but not least is yours truly and Cesar!

Six New Dog Breeds To Be Introduced At Westminster This Year

American English coonhound-One of 6 new breeds at the 2012 Westminster Dog Show

But don't expect any of these newbies to pull off a victory this year. The rookie breed that was honored with Best in Show the quickest was the Bichon Frise-who took 27 years from the time it was introduced in 1974 to nab the title.

Check out the descriptions of these six new breeds along with a slide show here: www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/24/westminster-kennel-club-dog-show-2012_n_1228192.html#s634885&title=Also_On_The

There will be a total of 185 breeds competing in this year's Westminster Kennel Club Dog show airing on February 13-14 on the USA channel. Although we tend to favor the good old American Mutt, we still enjoy learning about the history of each breed and seeing these beautiful canines strut their stuff.

Let us know if you plan to tune in and what breed or breeds you'll be rooting for.
