World Spay Day Is Today!

World Spay Day is an annual campaign of the Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter as one important way to save the lives of companion animals, feral and stray cats and street dogs who might otherwise be killed on the street or put down in shelters. Today is the 21st annual World Spay Day... and we've come a long way, baby!

World Spay Day also calls attention to the need to provide free and low-cost spay/neuter services to rural and other underserved communities. We're proud that a few years ago, Bocci's Beefs was able to donate $1,000 (via a direct contribution from The Pedigree Foundation) to the Columbus Dog Connection's spay/neuter bus that travels to rural communities in Ohio and provides free or low cost spay/neuter services.

Sunday's "Living With Your Pet" Tips: The Myths Surrounding Spay/ Neuter

It's hard to believe that many of us in the U.S. and around the world, still believe that spaying or neutering your dog will make your dog feel bad about himself in someway (no longer a stud/can't have babies) or cause weight gain. Many also believe that it's expensive. None of these statements is true!

What is factual is that millions of dogs worldwide are killed because they can't find homes, which directly ties to overpopulation caused by failure to spay or neuter companion animals. In honor of Spay/Neuter Awareness Month—World Spay Day in this Tuesday, February 25—Cesar Millan has tackled the problem of pet overpopulation by dispelling the top four myths surrounding spay/neuter.

These myths seem to spring from humans' projection of their feelings onto their dogs. As Cesar says, "Dogs don't raise a puppy for 18 years or dream of their puppy's wedding," so they're probably not mourning their inability to bear offspring, for example. Whatever the basis for these myths, education is the best antidote.

Although we're a bit late in sharing this information...we'd be remiss if we didn't give World Spay Day a shout out-today's the day! World Spay Day is an annual campaign of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International that shines a spot light on the importance of spaying or neutering your pets and the millions of homeless companion animals still looking for their forever homes. Don't worry: If you haven't done anything to promote this important day for animals everywhere, activities continue through the end of February, which is officially Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. Check out the low cost or free spay/neuter events near you!

Wordless Wednesday (Almost!)

We're going with this week's BlogPaws theme for Wordless Wednesday by featuring a perfectly wonderful adoptable pet, but one that's perhaps less likely to get adopted because of age or special needs.

So may we present nine years young, Boomer, available through the Columbus Dog Connection! (We featured Boomer in our inaugural issue of our newsletter-you can still get a complimentary copy by signing up for our e-mail blasts!)

Boomer is a 35lbs, male, and an exceptional pooch! He's great with dogs and kids, knows commands, loves to be with his person, knows sit, and stay, and even stays with his person on walks! He's a  relaxed, mellow, well mannered fellow who likes to use foster siblings as a pillow and loves exploring the yard.  He's great on leash, too!  If you're interested in adopting Boomer, please call

World Spay Day Is February 28th: How You Can Participate...It's Not What You Think!

Did you know that February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, and culminates in World Spay Day on February 28? This annual campaign  of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International shines a spotlight on spaying and neutering as a way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be killed on the street or euthanized in a shelter.

To support World Spay Day, the HSUS and HSI host the Spay Day Pet Photo Contest which is a fun way to celebrate our pets while raising funds for spaying and neutering-and there's an opportunity to win great prizes, too! It's simple to enter: just submit your favorite photo of your pet along with a few lines of relevant information about you and your best furfriend and you're all set. You can even enter directly on Facebook and upload a photo from your Facebook albums.

If you choose a favorite animal charity along with your submission, you can encourage friends and family (and perfect strangers, too!) to vote for your pet's photo for a minimum $1 donation-all proceeds go to help spay neuter projects around the world.
