Meanwhile, back at the Ohio Ranch, we're enjoying the waning days of fall. It's supposed to turn pretty brisk overnight in our neck of the woods.

Dogs And Squirrels And The Hunter Within...

The hunter within your dog, that is. Like me cornering a squirrel, below.

One of the blogs hosted by the The New York Times is called "Menagerie" and focuses on essays about people and their relationships with pets and other animals. Today, this marvelous essay from "Menagerie" was printed in the Sunday paper, "The Dog, the Squirrel and the Moment of Brilliance." Why, Parental Unit thought the author was talking about me!

Poor Parental Unit is torn: She does want me to indulge my natural instincts (and to get in some extra exercise) by chasing those bushy-tailed glorified rats. In fact, when I'm upstairs trying to get some shut-eye, she'll often call me down: "Bocci, there's a squirrel in your yard!" And since she's proven to be right, I rush down to safeguard my property. On the other hand, she really doesn't want me to catch one. I've come close a few times, and I swear you could hear her scream for miles....

The Dog's Guide To Outwitting Squirrels

O.K., this guide was really written for humans by humorist, Bill Adler Jr., to keep those ~~glorified rats~~ squirrels from gorging on the birdseed he kindly leaves for his avian friends. This Q&A in yesterdays Times gives you a hint at the way Adler's brain works: "Squirrels have all day long to figure out how to break into your feeder," he says, so Adler's days are spent concocting ways to subvert these bushy-tailed thieves.

In his most recent book, Outwitting Squirrels: 101 cunning Strategies to Reduce Dramatically the Egregious Misappropriation of Seed from Your Birdfeeder by Squirrels, Adler devises even more ways to thwart his backyard nemesis—this is the third edition of the book, by the way—the first was published in 1988, so Adler has had a squirrel problem for quite awhile now.

Does this remind you of anyone you know? Every since my adoption day, I've spent countless hours successfully ridding my backyard and surrounding parks (heck, everywhere I go!) from those nasty varmints. I think Mr. Adler should interview me for the next edition of his book!

BlogPaws Wordless Wednesday Pet Blogger Hop!

Today's "theme" over at BlogPaws is a continuation of International Pet Bloggers Month. We pet bloggers have lots to contribute to the world-wide community of pet lovers, including those folks who work for shelters and rescues. In that vein, BlogPaws has initiated a separate blog hop where you can link up posts directed to your local shelter: Describe three ways your shelter can better use social media to engage the community and increase adoptions. Then once your post goes live, link it to the bloghop-but hurry, cause you've only got till the end of September to post and link up! What a splendid idea!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I've been smiling a bit my self...why? Because with the advent of autumn, the squirrels are going crazy, and when the squirrels go crazy, I go crazy!
