The Godfather of Military Dogs

Col. Richardson and Red Cross Dogs. Photo courtesy of Foreign Policy magazine.

We never thought we'd read an article in Foreign Policy magazine, let alone tout it on our pet blog, but we stumbled across (as one is want to do on the Internet), this fascinating article about Lt. Col. Edwin Hautenville Richardson, who pioneered and championed the use of dogs in the military during World War I.  Richardson was a British soldier who petitioned his government to allow specially trained dogs in the military—primarily to deliver messages across enemy lines. According to this article, "When Britain declared war in August 1914, it had virtually no dogs on the battlefield."

Col. Richardson led the charge to change that statistic, and one hundred years later, the impact of his passion and training methods lives on. "...Richardson's compassionate treatment of his dogs, as well as his practice of reward-based training—which reinforced good behavior and success with joyful attention and a treat or toy—are the models for dog handling today."

We hope you enjoy this bit of canine history, and perhaps to cheer the spirit of Col. Richardson, give your faithful companion a little job to do...and don't forget the joyful praise or small treat.

Dog Park Bullies: How To Protect Your Dog

Clever illustration courtesy of Modern Dog Magazine

Raise your paw if you regularly take your dog to a dog park. Now raise your other paw if you've encountered a canine "bully" while trying to get a little off-leash time. O.K., about now you look like you're begging...

Now, I'm far from perfect with other dogs, and since Parental Unit knows I occasionally  "put out bad vibes" around large dogs (I've been attacked twice and Parental Unit thinks it's fear-based aggression), she keeps me strictly on the small dog side of our local dog park. But she always keeps a close watch on me and the other dogs I'm hangin' with—no disengaged cell phone conversations for her—she's too busy watching my interactions with the other pooches. I tell her there's nothing to worry about, but you know our philosophy—it's never too late to learn new and maybe even life-saving information.

Enter this excellent article from Modern Dog Magazine about how to recognize and cope with a dog park bully. The idea is to learn the signals of a canine bully (not necessarily bad or misbehaving dogs), and how to nip any suspicious interactions in the bud to prevent a more serious altercation.

Enjoy!

Celebrate ASPCA/Rachel Ray's 100K Challenge Winners With Gigantic Giveaway!

The Grand Prize winner of this year's ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge: The Central California SPCA in Fresno! Let's all put our paws together in a round of applause for this amazing group—and for all of the other winners, too!

The fifth and final ASPCA Rachel Ray 100K Challenge is officially one for the history books. And what a glorious history of saving lives it is! Animal shelters from all over the country work for three months to increase their adoption numbers over the same time the previous year, with the added incentive of a donation of $100,000 to the winning shelter, plus lots of other prizes. This year the combined total of lives saved is a whopping 68,805 in just 90 short days—that's more that twice the increases when the challenge began in 2010. And here's one more figure: In the challenge's five years, the competing shelters saved more than a quarter of a million lives!

Kudos to both Rachel Ray and the ASPCA for collaborating on this massive effort to find so many shelter animals loving, forever homes! But here's the best part: The extraordinary success of the participating shelters is proof that it can be done. Euthanasia rates can be drastically reduced with collaborative community efforts and lots of hard work. And it can happen at any animal shelter in the world. There are no excuses.

But wait, there's more! To help us celebrate the extraordinary effort and success of the participating shelters, the ASPCA and Rachel Ray have generously donated a very special prize pack that will go to one lucky Bocci's Beefs reader.

Here's what you could win!
·         Commonwealth Plush Pet
·         Rachael Ray Insulated Tote
·         ASPCA Travel Mug
·         Subaru Pop-Up Water Bowl
·         ASPCA PawPrint Bandana
·         ASPCA Pet Flying Disc
·         ASPCA Magnet
·         ASPCA Fleece Blanket
·         Cat Ear Beanie

Please enter via Rafflecopter below. The winner will be announced shortly after the giveaway's closing date of Friday November 7, 2014.

Let's Help Promote Adopt-A-shelter Dog Month!

Here I am looking a bit younger and not quite sure what to make of my new home.

We're in the home stretch of Adopt-A Shelter Dog Month and there's still lots of ways you can help get orphaned pets adopted into loving homes. Unfortunately, the shelter statistics are still heart wrenching: Over four million dogs enter U.S. shelters each year and nearly 40% of those never find their forever home.

The ASPCA has rounded up a few tips that will help you help celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month and make an impact in your community and across the country:

1. Adopt or Foster. You can use ASPCA's data base tool to find dogs near you in need of a home.

2. Share Your Story. If you share your home with a rescued dog, tell the ASPCA all about your furry friend's rescue story—you could even win a prize pack and have your story featured on ASPCA Parents!

3. Donate if at all possible. Help the ASPCA achieve their goal by making a gift to help them save lives!

And speaking of the ASPCA, stay tuned in the next few days to help them celebrate the winners of this year's Rachel Ray 100K Challenge...and win a spectacular gift pack right here on Bocci's Beefs!

Feline Does Tricks For Treats

This video was originally posted online a few years ago to showcase the potential of shelter animals, but has since become a mainstay of the Internet cat world. Does your cat do tricks? They can be taught, but from what I've seen it takes years to get a simple paw shake out of them. In our house, Bella just demands food and Parental Unit obliges with a smile. What about your kitty?

Three Top Pet Care Tips to #GetHealthyHappy!

For the last few months we've been sharing strategies for healthier pets and happier lives for both pets and pet parents. After all, we pets depend on our Parental Units for just about everything, so it's kinda important that you stay on top of the latest pet care information to help us #GetHealthyHappy" and to stay that way. Right?

We love this illustration because it's so true: It's all about love and the human-pet bond, and what we can all to do make that bond stronger. The healthier your pets are, the longer and happier their lives will be—and the care you pet parents give makes all the difference.

For us, it comes down to three basic ways to reach the goals of happy dogs, happy cats and healthy pets.

Let's talk mealtime. You are what you eat. And since we depend on you to choose our food for us (unless we routinely counter surf), please choose wisely. There are so many pet foods out there, so scrutinize labels and talk with your veterinarian about the best food for your pet and his or her breed and lifestyle.

By the way, don't miss this $10 off promotion on select Hills Science Diet products to get your pet started on #GetHealthyHappy!

The Little Extras. We think these tips for bonding with us really are the icing on the cake, so to speak. And cake without icing can be a bit bland!. Exercising our intellectual capabilities as well as regularly indulging our physical need for lots of exercise are just two of the "Little Extras" that make our lives better. Try puzzle toys, food foraging, training, competitions or just long walks by your side to add fulfillment to our lives and yours. We love just being with you, you know?

And don't forget our treats, they're a great way to reward us for good behavior and, well, just because!

Haven't I been a good boy, Parental Unit?

Annual Vet Visits. It bears repeating that skipping just one of your pets' annual checkups is like you humans missing five years of doctor's visits! It's so important to establish a relationship with a veterinarian that you like and trust, so he or she can get to know your pet. That way, it's a lot easier for your vet to spot unusual changes or conditions that can nip any ailments in the bud—before they become serious. It's our belief that regular vet visits come with the pet parenting territory, so do both your pet and you a favor and schedule any overdue vet checkups today!

I love visiting Dr. Mike...but I'd like to go back to Parental Unit now, if you don't mind!

We all want to give our pets the longest, healthiest and happiest life possible, and that journey starts with you, and the care you give your beloved four-legged companions. Dogs And Squirrels And The Hunter Within...

The hunter within your dog, that is. Like me cornering a squirrel, below.

One of the blogs hosted by the The New York Times is called "Menagerie" and focuses on essays about people and their relationships with pets and other animals. Today, this marvelous essay from  "Menagerie" was printed in the Sunday paper, "The Dog, the Squirrel and the Moment of Brilliance."  Why, Parental Unit thought the author was talking about me!

Poor Parental Unit is torn: She does want me to indulge my natural instincts (and to get in some extra exercise) by chasing those bushy-tailed glorified rats. In fact, when I'm upstairs trying to get some shut-eye, she'll often call me down: "Bocci, there's a squirrel in your yard!" And since she's proven to be right, I rush down to safeguard my property. On the other hand, she really doesn't want me to catch one. I've come close a few times, and I swear you could hear her scream for miles....

Top Ten Reasons To Adopt A Shelter Dog

My top reason...because we former shelter  dogs are so darn handsome! Photo Credit: Rachel Lauren Photography.

Do we really need any more great reasons to adopt a shelter dog? Like, oh, saving a life, making room for another abandoned dog at the shelter, saving money, discouraging irresponsible breeders by taking away their market... Well, just in case we do, here are at least ten great reasons courtesy of one of our favorite holistic veterinarians, Dr. Karen Becker. Check 'em out and share with your friends who might be considering a new family member.

Can you think of any other reasons to adopt your next pooch from a shelter? Let us know!
As always, thanks for your support!

The Majority Of Bloggers Are Women!

A good friend of Parental Unit, Yvonne DiVita, is one of the co-founders of BlogPaws and a prolific writer and savvy entrepreneur. She also started a marvelous blog for women in business, aptly named The Lipsticking Society. And here's something she posted just a few days ago that I'd like to share with you. Lots of new and exciting ideas coming soon!

Blogging is So 1999!

YvonneDiVita - Women in the Pet Industryby Yvonne DiVita
It may only be October but the New Year is looming. Somehow, once we hit September, the days and weeks pass by in a blur and before you know it, Jolly Old St Nick is arriving, with the celebratory night called New Year's Eve, hard on his heels. I wonder how St. Nick celebrates - does he just crash and heave a big sigh, and wait for his wife to bring him a beer? #thingsthatmakeyougohmmmm
Over the last two years, as I've worked more intimately in blogging and programs with brands, over at BlogPaws, my emerging and strong community of pet people who blog or tweet or just connect to make life better for animals everywhere, I've learned a thing or two about where we're going with this social media stuff. You know, the Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc...stuff. The stuff that is a direct result of blogging.
Back in 1994, when I started blogging, we were brand new. "What's blogging?" folks would say, with that quizzical look on their faces, when we told people that's what we were about.
"It's... like an interactive newsletter, online," I would say. Or, "It's a conversation," Tom would say.
The blank looks persisted.
Over time, folks 'got it.' The Internet, they discovered, was a useful tool. The Internet, and websites, and BLOGS, could help them market and sell and connect and grow. Hallelujah.
The infographic over at Social 4 Retail tells us that 6.7 million people blog on blogging sites, while 12 million blog via social networks (Facebook and twitter). It also says...wait for it... drumroll please... "the majority of bloggers are WOMEN"
Looking at that graphic, we see a list of the highest earning blogs which includes Mashable, Techcrunch, and something called Car Advice. Interesting, the car advice one. The others are well known and you'd expect them to make almost any list of good blogs. The key here is to recognize that they are blogs.
Majority-women-bloggers

As we move into 2015, into a new decade, into an ever increasing world of "what ifs"... where folks like my 16 year old granddaughter take social media and talking phones and texting for granted, the way we old folks took color TV and remote controls and power steering for granted when OUR parents had to watch black and white TV, get up and change the 3 channels if they wanted something new, and drive cars that built muscles... I have to wonder where the whole blogging craze is going.
We're moving beyond the focus of blogging. It was a tool to build expertise and connect people by sharing stories. It was a way to meet new people without ever leaving your home. It grew into a way to market to the masses by having individuals, consumers if you will, share the product or service or next big promotion. People began to accept the input from bloggers - and brands recognized the influence these popular writers maintained. Suddenly, okay, maybe not 'suddenly', maybe over a period of years, bloggers gained not only acceptance but respect. Of a sort. There are still brands today that mistrust bloggers and we are as likely to be portrayed in TV shows or movies as gossipy, with a lack of integrity, rather than as journalists who deserve to be paid for their work, not their opinion.
And yet... as time marches on, which it is wont to do, regardless of how many naps you take or how long you step away from your computer or whether you miss a favorite TV show or not... the world of marketing, to women or otherwise, has begun to change. It's moving away from blogs. It's moving away from social.
Let me clarify, lest you rush to cancel those Facebook ads you launched yesterday, or you dismiss that amazing new agency with the smart and talented social person who is going to get you in front of thousands of new customers, at the click of a mouse... Bloggers are still influential. Bloggers are actually growing in influence, by virtue of their expertise and knowledge - gained over the last ten years doing this kind of thing; connecting to people personally, through their writing, and via their vast social networks. Blogs and bloggers are evolving.
And therein lies the tale. As we grow, as we learn, we evolve. As we evolve, we become something different. As we move into the connective tissue of this thing we call social, we realize that some parts are better than others, some parts stronger than others, and some parts... just not worth paying attention to. We, the bloggers of the ancient world of 1999, are recognizing the need to be more.
Therefore, I repeat - blogging is so 1999!
What will you do in 2015 that rocks the blogosphere and gets people's attention? What will you do with this thing you call your blog, which is really a personal, online newsletter or diary, of sorts? Will you improve it? Delete it? Embrace it with a passion that says, "Here's who I am, what I do, and how I do it?" And continue being the voice for your higher purpose, on your blog and elsewhere, expecting brands and consumers all to stay in check?
I am not. I am creating something new and exciting. This blog is moving. You will hear more in the very near future...and I hope you will come with me. The world is not enclosed in the small spaces one has for her personal blog. The passion I have for helping women in businss cannot be contained in this one space of a blog called Lipsticking. I have big dreams. I have big expectations. I believe women are the answer to the ills of the world - it's a belief I've had for more than 10 years, and one I've supported on this blog space.
Lips-2Stay tuned for MORE. Stay tuned for BETTER. Stay tuned for:
    #womenofpower
    #womenofdistinction
    #womenofsubstance
I hope you will join us and bring all of your friends. It's in our connectedness that we will change the world.

World Animal Day!

What a glorious day! Animals the world over get a "blessing" for this special celebration.

World Animal Day was founded back in 1931 at a convention of Ecologists in Italy (the Catholic Church's Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals), to honor a variety of animal species and their importance to humans and our planet.

Here's to our pets and all animals world wide!

St. Francis, are you out there?

#GetHealthyHappy With Your Pets...And "Little Extras" Giveaway!

Don't just get happy. #GetHealthyHappy!

Scroll to the end of this post for details on how to win one of two "Little Extras Prize Packs" for your dog or cat, courtesy of Hills!

Raise your paw if you manage to engage your human in playtime at least once a day!

Newsflash: Playing with your pets regularly is one way to ensure they stay not only healthy, but happy, too. You see, we dogs and our feline friends are smart, and we need to use our brains every day to solve problems, like "How do I get my "fetching stick" back from Parental Unit (see above picture) or "Someone just threw a ball, where the heck is it?" And the currently popular, "How do I get the dang lid off this ridiculous puzzle toy to get the treat hidden inside?"  In the old days, when most dogs had outdoor jobs like herding sheep or guarding property, this work was our daily enrichment. Today, we pampered pooches and indoor kitties need those "little extras" to #GetHealthyHappy, and stay that way.

This is my pal, Bella, hiding in her favorite scrunchy bag and joined by her favorite toy. Cats, by the way, should engage their predatory instincts during play, say, with a moving ball, mouse or feather at the end of a string.

It's more about chasing and chewing to engage dogs' instinctual behaviors.

Of course, regular vet visits and proper nutrition are tops in importance for ensuring your pet has a long and healthy life. But you can't forget about our mental health, and that's where bonding with you comes in. Basic training, with treats as a reward (hint, hint), is also a great way to spend quality time with your pet. Happy pets equals happy humans, too!

Our friends at Hills have a plethora of treats to help reinforce our good behavior...and to give us just because we're cute! Parental Unit breaks my biscuits into smaller pieces, and I usually get a few on our walks or during grooming (see below). I've also trained her to give me a treat after I get my paws wiped off when coming in from the backyard—hehehe!

To sweeten the pot, Hills is offering a $10 rebate for select Hills Science Diet products. Just click and save!

And you know, we pets love it when you spend time with us, even when you're (dare I say it) grooming us. Now, I'm not a fan of Parental Unit brushing or combing my fur, but she does it anyway to make sure my coat isn't tangled, and to remove dirt, excess hair and whatnot before I snooze on her bed. And of course, I get a few treats if I don't try and run away. Offering a small treat during and after grooming helps your pet associate this time with a pleasurable experience, like EATING!

The bottom line is "Love". And how you show your love for your pets is different for each pet parent: long walks, training, playtime, grooming, sharing toys and treats, or just hangin' out are great ways to let your four-legged friends know you care enough to give them the best life possible.

And now on to our giveaway! To celebrate the"Little Extras" that enrich our pets' lives, Hills is giving away bundles of goodies every pet parent can enjoy sharing with their dog or cat.

Dog Bundle:
1) a stainless steel dog bowl, 2) a bag of Hill’s Science Diet Dental Chews,  3) a bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog treats,  4) a Healthier Pets, Happier Lives tote bag.

Cat Bundle:
1) a laser pointer toy,  2) a stainless steel cat bowl,  3) eight micro cans of Hill’s Science Diet Grain Free entrees,  4) a Healthier Pets, Happier Lives tote bag.
