ASPCA's #31DaysOfRescueDogs Campaign!

Fun graphic courtesy of ASPCA

The gorgeous month of October is nearly at its half-way point...which means you have 17 days remaining to add your voice to the #31DaysOfRescueDogs Campaign, generously co-sponsored by the ASPCA and Animal Planet.

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, and what better way to shine a spotlight on all the gorgeous dogs waiting at shelters for their forever home, than to launch a fun social media campaign to help raise funds for homeless pets? Here's what you and all of your family and friends can do to participate in this month's festivities:

1. Tell all of your friends and social media followers that you'll be participating in the #31DaysOfRescueCampaign.

2. Post one photo of your favorite rescue dog for 31 days on social media channels (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) using the hashtag #31DaysOfRescueDogs.

3. Encourage your friends to donate $1 a day in exchange for 31 days of adorable photos ($31 goes a long way for shelter dogs in need!). And, let them know that everyone who donates will get a dedicated 31 Days Of Rescue Dogs temporary tattoo!

4. Share your favorite photos for a chance to be featured on Animal Planet during the Pit Bulls and Parolees marathon, submit your photo here!

5. The top three fundraisers will win prizes from the ASPCA and its great partner, Animal Planet.

On top of all that fun, @ASPCA will be hosting a #TrickOrTreats HOWLoween Twitter Trivia party on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at 2:00PM EST. They'll be lots of prizes so stop by if you can!

September is Disaster Preparedness Month: Have You Prepared For Your Pets?

We can't prepare for a disaster on our own, you know! So what are ya waiting for, Parental Unit?

Yes, we've written about disaster preparedness before, but there's no harm in reminding our readers (and Parental Unit!) of the basics each year.

Anyway, the good folks at the ASPCA have given us all a gift in the form of loads of information and a specific checklist to help all of us prepare to ensure our beloved pets' safely in case of disaster, whether we must evacuate our homes or stay put with limited utilities and resources. The most important item to remember is that it is now almost always possible to take our pets with us in case we have to evacuate...it's "No Pet Left Behind" these days!

The ASPCA also created this nifty infographic to help put it all together.

What say you? Have you got a family disaster preparedness plan in place that includes your pets? Let us know!

July Fourth Fun And Pet Safety!

We're stickin' together this holiday weekend, although neither of us are bothered much by the loud noises...

But we know lots of you are bothered by the festivities. In fact, this recent article in the Science Section of the New York Times says that "almost half of all dogs suffer from 'noise anxiety'". And it's not just July 4th fireworks—summer's frequent thunderstorms in some parts of the country aid and abet this noise anxiety.

Although this article discusses a new drug that may help dogs that have more extreme reactions to noise, it also details some of the additonal reasons dogs ( and humans!) dislike storms. For example, the "significant pressure changes, frantic winds, massive electrical discharges and concussive sounds". It's also important to remember that "Dogs can hear above and below our auditory range."

Veternarians and researchers cited in this piece also reaffirm some of the more old-fashioned methods to help your dog, like "muffling noise with quiet music, and if possible, staying with the dog in a windowless, interior room. Because a dog's flight response is on overload, it  is seeking a haven." And we pet owners should try to provide that haven.

When you have a spare moment admist your holiday festivities, let us know if your pets are adversely affected by the loud noises of fireworks and/or thunderstorms, and what you do to help ease their anxiety. We'd love to hear your stories!

P.S. As a counter to your pets' anxiety, we're proud to offer this ASPCA Summer Gift Pack to one lucky winner! Enter now—giveaway ends at 11:59 pm on July 11th. And we can safely say that the prizes include several anti-anxiety helpers for both you and your dog, like a Subaru yoga mat, and fun summer toys!

A Happy and Safe Independence Day to all of our blogging friends in the U.S.!

Tomorrow is ASPCA's "ID Your Pet Day"...And Gift Pack GiveAway!

We're excited to spread the important news: The ASPCA has created "ID Your Pet Day" — and that's tomorrow, July 1, 2016!  This campaign intends to raise awareness among pet owners that it is incredibly important (and potentially lifesaving!) to have an official ID tag for your pet.

Courtesy of our friends at the ASPCA, we also have an ASPCA Summer Gift Pack to giveaway to one lucky reader! See details at the end of this post about the gift pack and how to enter.

With the July 4th holiday just days away, and its attendant fireworks, backyard barbecues and other outdoor festivities, it's especially important for pet owners to keep careful watch of their beloved pets. But just in case your dog or cat manages to slip through, over or under a fence, or otherwise escapes the security of their home and yard, a personalized ID tag is the best way to increase the likelihood of your pet returning home. So make sure your pet is fitted with a collar and ID Tag, and is microchipped, just in case the collar and ID is somehow lost.

Don't forget to download the ASPCA app to your smart phone to access personalized instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances. What a wonderful tool to have in an emergency!

And check out this nifty ASPCA infographic to help you ensure your beloved pet will be safe and sound.

"Accidents Happen": It Doesn't Mean Your Dog Isn't Housebroken!

I "came housebroken" when Parental Unit adopted me from our local shelter when I was about nine months old. But that didn't mean I didn't have a few "transitional" accidents...particularly after I ate and entire bag of dog biscuits she left on the counter—oops!

We think this article in the ASPCA Pro newsletter by veterinarian Emily Weiss is an important read for all new pet owners, particularly for those adopting a new canine family member from a shelter or rescue. It turns out that perception is more important than statistical numbers of in-home "accidents"— specifically to those new pet parents who received "housebreaking" counseling prior to adopting their new pooch. Guess which group of new pet parents is more forgiving of "accidents"?

It's particularly important because a dog that isn't housebroken or perceived to be not trainable in that area is much more likely to be returned to the shelter. We think the important thing to remember is to allow your new dog transition time—wouldn't you be a bit nervous being taken from a shelter to a new home...? Of course, you can't expect your new dog to be perfect, even if the shelter or foster says your new family member is "housebroken". And do cut him or her a break if there's an accident. Speaking only for me, I was a nervous wreck for the first several weeks in my new home and will admit to a few mistakes—although now, nearly eight years later, I am the world's most perfect dog.

Speaking of the ASPCA, we'll be doing a very special ASPCA Gift Pack giveaway this Thursday, April 14, so please stay tuned!

ASPCA Says #GetTough On Animal Fighting!

We agree: Raise the jail penalties for people who fight animals!

We're thrilled to help spread the word about ASPCA's latest campaign: #GetTough on Animal Fighting!  The ASPCA needs our help to get the U.S. Sentencing Commission to raise the jail penalties for people who fight animals.

Here's the scoop: Clearly, our community of animals lovers believes that dog fighting, for example, is a terrible crime—and thankfully, it's considered a felony in all 50 states. Federal law allows this crime to be punished with prison terms of up to 5 years, but the current federal sentencing guidelines categorize animal fighting as a “gambling offense” and suggest a base level sentence of only 6-12 months. Unfortunately, these recommended jail sentences don't match the seriousness of the offense. Typically, convicted dog fighters receive prison sentences as low as six months in jail, and almost half of all offenders only get probation.

Now is the perfect time to make our collective voices heard and bring the penalties for animal fighting more in line with the severity of the crime. In April, the U.S. Sentencing Commission will be updating their sentencing guidelines and animal fighting is on the agenda. Won't you support raising the penalties for those convicted of animal fighting by filling out this simple form at https://secure.aspca.org/form/get-tough? The Commission will be accepting public comments only until March 21, 2016, so you've got about 10 days to submit your comments and help the #GetTough cause!

Feel free to write your own blog post supporting this campaign and/or share on social media, using the above ASPCA icon. As always, thanks for all you do to help animals!

The ASPCA Says: Four Ways You Can Help Animals This Holiday Season!

Yes you! There are so many animals that need just a bit of extra love, food, toys, walks or all of the above, particularly during the holidays. But the good folks at the ASPCA have four specific suggestions that you can easily accomplish that will help all of our animal friends this holiday season. Working together, we can really make a difference!

Check out this nifty infographic that explains exactly what you can do to help our fellow creatures in need. Let us know if you have any plans to help out at your local animal shelter, or other good deeds that will help our furry friends. We'd love to hear about them!

Pet Adoption=Instant Gratification!

Cute photo of me by our good friend and neighbor, John Clark

One of Parental Unit's favorite lines from Hollywood's witty royalty, Carrie Fisher, is "Instant gratification takes too long." And let me tell ya, impatient Parental Unit jibes with that sentiment.

So if you'd like to get some instant gratification of your own, why not adopt a pet during the remaining days of beautiful October, officially dubbed "Adopt A Shelter Dog Month" by the ASPCA?

if you're still on the fence, here's one immediate reward: You can save a ton of money by choosing to adopt rather than shop.

This handy chart points out the savings by adopting from the ASPCA, but most, if not all shelters also send you home with your new best friend with the same cost and time-saving benefits—all for one typically low, adoption fee. Oh yeah, the lifetime of love that's included: Priceless.

Help Celebrate Shelter Dogs With The ASPCA And Animal Planet!

Here's one shelter dog who's livin' the good life...

Since October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, this is your chance to help dogs in shelters all across the country find their forever homes. Unfortunately, there are approximately four million dogs entering shelters each year in the United States alone, and so many of those four million never find loving homes.

Enter the ASPCA and the good folks at Animal Planet to help draw attention to all of these beautiful, but homeless dogs with a prize-filled social media contest—and you and your beautiful adopted dog have a chance to win big!

Just sign up here to take the pledge to "Make Pet Adoption Your Only Option" and upload a photo of your rescued dog. Yours could be one of three favorite photos selected to receive a special ASPCA and Animal Planet prize pack. Plus, all entries submitted before Friday, October 16th (Hurry!) may be eligible to appear on a new episode of Pit Bulls & Parolees on Animal Planet Saturday, October 10th or 17th at 10/9c!

Don't forget to share your rescue dog's photo on all of your social media channels using the hashtag #MyRescueDog and tagging @aspca and @animalplanet.

Because large dogs are more frequently overlooked in shelters, the ASPCA is urging everyone looking to add a new four-legged family member to consider adopting a larger dog because "It's not the size of your home but the size of your heart that matters." Can you say #BigLove?

We've already entered, and we're excited to see your photos! Please share your favorite photo of your rescue dog with us, too, on our Facebook page

As always, thanks for all you do to help shelter pets.

Why It's More Important Than Ever To Have A Disaster Prep Plan

I look ready to take charge of anything here, but truth be told, I'd depend on my Parental Unit to help me evacuate our home in the event of a natural or other disaster. (Photo credit: Rachel Lauren Photography)

You've probably all heard by now about the terrible flash floods in Utah and horrific wildfires in California.  A recent New York Times article focused on the many pets left behind as people fled their homes in the frantic effort to escape the raging California fires. "...many residents fled with only the clothes they were wearing. The suddenness of the fire's surge—half an hour from warning to life-threatening conflagration"—left little time for implementing an evacuation plan.

Unfortunately, many pets were left behind, and in the mostly rural areas, hundreds of horses, goats and sheep had to fend for themselves, too. Although the fires are still raging, rescue workers and veterinarians have begun returning to the area with food and water for the animals and attempting to reunite them with their families. Burned kittens were evacuated to a larger hospital at the University of California Davis, where students are helping with their treatment.

As the ASPCA and other animal and human organizations have urged, it's vital for each of us, no matter where we live, to have a disaster preparedness plan and supplies ready for all of our family members, including our pets. It's also probably smart to practice the plan several times, so everyone knows their part.

What say you? Do you have a disaster preparedness plan in place along with a pet emergency first aid and evacuation kit ready to go in the event of a disaster and/or evacuation? Let us know!

A Decade Since Hurricane Katrina: The ASPCA Wants You To Be Prepared!

With a little planning and preparation, we can all do better!

Ten years ago this Sunday, Hurricane Katrina barreled into Louisiana, leaving massive tragedy in its wake. The hurricane and subsequent levy break left nearly 2000 people dead and at least 600,000 pets deceased or homeless. A key finding from evaluating response efforts and interviewing residents of the hardest hit districts revealed that nearly half (44%) of the people who refused to evacuate said they did so because they could not bring their pets with them. Despite this tragic wake-up call and ten years of seeing other natural disasters cut paths of destruction, a recent poll shows that 35% of pet owners still don't have disaster preparedness plans in place.

But wait! The ASPCA is here to help you change that! First, check out their nifty, "When Disaster Strikes" infographic, which includes simple steps that can save lives in case of an emergency.

Then, please "Take the Pledge" to prepare for your pets in the event of a natural disaster and share the infographic on all your social media channels. Remember: Your pets lives may depend on it!

Many thanks to the ASPCA for taking the lead on natural disaster preparedness for you and your pets!
