Tomorrow is ASPCA's "ID Your Pet Day"...And Gift Pack GiveAway!

We're excited to spread the important news: The ASPCA has created "ID Your Pet Day" — and that's tomorrow, July 1, 2016!  This campaign intends to raise awareness among pet owners that it is incredibly important (and potentially lifesaving!) to have an official ID tag for your pet.

Courtesy of our friends at the ASPCA, we also have an ASPCA Summer Gift Pack to giveaway to one lucky reader! See details at the end of this post about the gift pack and how to enter.

With the July 4th holiday just days away, and its attendant fireworks, backyard barbecues and other outdoor festivities, it's especially important for pet owners to keep careful watch of their beloved pets. But just in case your dog or cat manages to slip through, over or under a fence, or otherwise escapes the security of their home and yard, a personalized ID tag is the best way to increase the likelihood of your pet returning home. So make sure your pet is fitted with a collar and ID Tag, and is microchipped, just in case the collar and ID is somehow lost.

Don't forget to download the ASPCA app to your smart phone to access personalized instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances. What a wonderful tool to have in an emergency!

And check out this nifty ASPCA infographic to help you ensure your beloved pet will be safe and sound.

Now on to the ASPCA fun summer gift pack giveaway that includes:
·               ASPCA Tote
·               ASPCA Frisbee
·               ASPCA Beach Ball
·               ASPCA Towel
·               Subaru Yoga Mat

Just follow the simple Rafflecopter directions to enter...and good luck to all!

"Accidents Happen": It Doesn't Mean Your Dog Isn't Housebroken!

I "came housebroken" when Parental Unit adopted me from our local shelter when I was about nine months old. But that didn't mean I didn't have a few "transitional" accidents...particularly after I ate and entire bag of dog biscuits she left on the counter—oops!

We think this article in the ASPCA Pro newsletter by veterinarian Emily Weiss is an important read for all new pet owners, particularly for those adopting a new canine family member from a shelter or rescue. It turns out that perception is more important than statistical numbers of in-home "accidents"— specifically to those new pet parents who received "housebreaking" counseling prior to adopting their new pooch. Guess which group of new pet parents is more forgiving of "accidents"?

It's particularly important because a dog that isn't housebroken or perceived to be not trainable in that area is much more likely to be returned to the shelter. We think the important thing to remember is to allow your new dog transition time—wouldn't you be a bit nervous being taken from a shelter to a new home...? Of course, you can't expect your new dog to be perfect, even if the shelter or foster says your new family member is "housebroken". And do cut him or her a break if there's an accident. Speaking only for me, I was a nervous wreck for the first several weeks in my new home and will admit to a few mistakes—although now, nearly eight years later, I am the world's most perfect dog.

Speaking of the ASPCA, we'll be doing a very special ASPCA Gift Pack giveaway this Thursday, April 14, so please stay tuned!

#DoUntoAnimals Review And Giveaway!

Yes, you can enter to win a copy of this fantastic book by Tracey Stewart! Just see the Rafflecopter directions at the end of this post.

We're thrilled to tell you a bit about Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide To How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, by Tracey Stewart and give you the opportunity to win a copy. And if you need a last minute present for an animal loving friend or sweetheart, we guarantee this wonderful book will make the perfect Valentine's Day gift!

True to its title, it is a friendly and fun read—no preaching or figurative finger-wagging from Ms. Stewart. Do Unto Animals is all about education, presented in the friendliest and kindest tone, and enhanced with mesmerizing, luxurious illustrations by Lisel Ashlock. Once you dive in, you'll see we all have a lot to learn about how our furry and feathered companions live, what makes them comfortable and happy, and the simple steps we can take now, to improve their lives.

New York Times article described Ms. Stewart as "The Horse, Dog, Goat, Sheep and Cat Whisperer", and the book as a "charming...memoir and how-to about enriching the world of the creatures in your life, whether they be dogs, cats or the crows in your backyard." And we heartily agree.

For those of us who can only dream of living on an expansive property with an array of animals, this book will prepare us for caring well for any creature we might encounter or rescue, just in case our dreams come true. With chapters like "How to Make A Turkey Happy" (hint: it does not involved being roasted and basted for the Thanksgiving table), "Adopt, Don't Shop" that makes an eloquent case for adoption, and "Living in Harmony with Our Burrowing Buddies, we learn how to live in harmony with the fascinating array of creatures who share our world.

The book also includes "Stewart Family Traditions" that describe how you might involve your entire clan in caring for animals (Ms. Stewart is the spouse of Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, and their New Jersey farm property is slated to become an animal sanctuary and educational center). The chapters also include numerous DIY projects (think bee house, frog sanctuary or simple cat toys), and even recipes your four-legged friends will enjoy—horse cookies, anyone?

As Ms. Stewart said when discussing the plight of carriage horses: "It is possible to find joy in and inspiration from animals without their having to suffer for it." And that sums up what this book shows us with gentleness and humor: we can make simple changes in our lives that demonstrate compassion and caring for our fellow living creatures—and role model these behaviors for our children.

By the way, you don't have to own or even live near a farm sanctuary to help. You can sponsor a farm animal just like you sponsor dogs and cats at your local shelter! For example, check out Farm Sanctuary and learn how you can "adopt" the rescued farm animal of your choice and even receive a certificate of adoption and a photo of your new  farm friend. What a great gift this would make, wouldn't it? May we suggest that you pass on those giant stuffed teddy bears and instead purchase a copy of Do Unto Animals and sponsor a real farm animal for your favorite Valentine? Just a suggestion...

And if you want to keep up with Tracey Stewart and the goings on with her family and their animal sanctuary, check out her online presence at: MooMah Magazine

Now, on to the giveaway! One lucky reader will win a copy of Tracey Stewart's Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide To How Animals Live, and How We Can make Their Lives Better. Just follow the simple Rafflecopter directions below. Entrants must live in the U.S. or Canada.

Sleepypod "Cloudpuff Blankie": Review And Giveaway!

Here's the Cloudpuff Blankie we received. See how you can enter to win one of these gorgeous Blankies at the end of this post!

Note: We received one "Blankie" for our review and use. Then...we received another one from the company due to a shipping error. We're keeping one and have given away the extra to our friend who just became a pet parent for the first time. Sleepypod will kindly ship one Sleepypod Cloudpuff Blankie in the winner's choice of size and color. Of course, the opinions in this post have not been swayed by receiving these samples...really!

We are thrilled, thrilled we tell you, to share with you a bit about Sleepypod's Cloudpuff Blankie—it's classy, great looking and extremely well made—in other words, what you've come to expect from Sleepypod. As you might remember, we brought you a review and giveaway of Sleepypod's Clickit Sport dog safety harness earlier this year.—we still love it!

Parental Unit was immediately attracted to the Cloudpuff Blankie's rugged, western-ish good looks juxtaposed with its plush super softness: it's made with ultra soft polyester shearling on one side and microfiber suede on the other—it is indeed a "blankie"! And she loves the Champagne or Chestnut color choices.

We received the size large in Chestnut. Here I am relaxing on the microfiber suede side.

And Ms. Bella resting on the shearling side, which she seems to prefer.

This Blankie is just the right size—not too big to be cumbersome and not too small for either of us to stretch out on. And it has as many uses as you can think of, like a blanket, car seat, sofa or chair cover, or even a pet carrier liner. Of course, the Blankie is machine washable/line dry. Parental Unit has not washed ours yet, but will likely use the cold or warm water delicate cycle. (Don't tell anyone, but she might risk give it a quick tumble in the dryer on very low heat until it is just damp).

By the way, in case you're not the lucky winner, you can easily purchase your own Sleepypod Cloudpuff Blankie right here—don't you think they'd make a wonderful (maybe a few days belated) holiday gift for your pet-loving friends?

Enter to win by completing the Rafflecopter entries below. Giveaway open to residents of the continental United States, 18 and over and void where prohibited by law. Anonymous or "unknown" comments and entries will not be accepted.

Holiday Pet Safety Tips

Is Santa here yet?

We know there's lots of ideas out there for keeping your pets safe during the hubbub of the holidays, but these tips from the veterinarian for Halo, Purely for Pets, Dr. Donna Spector, are particularly detailed, yet easy to understand...and to immediately put into practice.

Toxic plants include Poinsettias, Mistletoe and even Lillies—so keep out of your pets' reach...somehow. If you have a live tree, prevent your pets from lapping up that tree water or ingesting needles by putting a playpen around the tree (we're guessing this won't work for cats!). You should also secure your tree to the wall or ceiling in case your pooch or kitty tangles with an ornament. And of course, no tinsel!

Because Parental Unit's home includes both me and the cat, she only decorates her mantle, where neither of us can reach, and hangs ornaments from doorknobs—so unfortunately, her holiday decorating has become half-hearted, at best.

After a read-through of these strategies for pet proofing your home for the holidays, can you think of any other pet safety tips you'd like to add? We'd love to hear them!

Meanwhile, a gentle reminder that our giveaway of one hardback copy of "All Dogs Go To Kevin, Everything Three Dogs Taught Me (That I Didn't Learn In Veterinary School), by Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, ends tonight at midnight, so hurry on over and enter—and give a shout-out to your friends, too!

"All Dogs Go To Kevin": Review And Giveaway!

We couldn't be more excited to have this opportunity to tell you a little about a wonderful book: All Dogs Go To Kevin,  Everything Three Dogs Taught Me (That I Didn't Learn In Veterinary School), by Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, and to give away a copy to one lucky reader. Please know that we have received one hardback copy of this book and one to give away to our winner. We have not been otherwise compensated for writing this post, and rest assured our opinions about All Dogs Go To Kevin have not been swayed by two free copies!

See how to enter at the end of this post!

Parental Unit was lucky enough to chat with the author, Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, on a shuttle from the airport to a BlogPaws Conference a few years ago. She remembers that "Dr. V", (a nickname that her clients who couldn't pronounce "Vogelsang", gave her) was friendly, super smart and funny, qualities that shine through in this charming and witty memoir. O.K. Parental Unit thinks this book is more than "witty"—it's fits into her "wildly funny" category—Dr. V.'s self-depreciating humor coupled with hilarious descriptions of, well, just about everything, make all of her stories a joy to read. How many women do you know compare their dog (who had just emerged from eating a box of powdered sugar) to "Al Pacino after a coke binge in Scarface"? I thought so.

Here's a picture of Dr. V. and canine friend.

Dr. V., her husband, their two young children and a series of goofy, lovable dogs let us into their world and demonstrate the importance of family and friends—including the canine variety—in enriching our lives. But you'll also learn about what it takes to get through veterinary school and to practice veterinary medicine in a clinic setting, including the array of clients, both lovable and...well, not so lovable, whose pets she tends with great care.

Dr. V. is also a superb writer, by the way, who's easy-going style draws you right into the action. When she learned that her dog, Emmett, had lymphoma, she stated simply: "We teach our dogs to "stay", but they never do."

Parental Unit particularly loves Dr. V.'s poignant epilogue, where she vows to honor her dogs, past and present by "...striving just a little more to live like they did: with joy, unabashed and open, reminding myself and others that our flaws do not make us less, but ever more worthy of being loved just the way we are." We can learn so much from our pets, and All Dogs Go To Kevin helps show us the joy they bring to our lives, and how we can make sure we give them joy in return.

Dr Vogelsang's current veterinary practice provides in-home hospice care for dogs and cats. She's also  founder of the website Pawcurious.com, and we can't recommend it highly enough. We're thrilled to bring you the opportunity to win a copy of All Dogs Go To Kevin, by entering the Rafflecopter giveaway below.

Potential winner limited to the continental United States. Void where prohibited.

                                 Good Luck!

Zuke's Latest Treats: Genuine Beef Jerky Trio Giveaway!

The latest in Zuke's amazing line of super high quality treats: Genuine Jerky Treats come in three different beef recipes (Original, Barbecue and Teriyaki)  and you can win a three pack for your best friend right here. See directions at the end of this post to enter!
You know we're a fan of Zuke's and have brought you a number of Zuke's treat giveaways in the past. Thanks to Zuke's generosity, we recently received three packages of Zuke's Genuine Jerky Beef Treats, one in each delicious flavor, for our review.  Zuke's is also graciously providing a three pack of these treats for our winner. We have received no other compensation for this post and the opinions are, of course, our own.

Here's my trio of treats—notice who's sniffin' things out already. Full disclosure: I've eaten almost a full bag, so I know how delicious they are!

You also know how Parental Unit loves to examine ingredients for both her food and mine with microscopic precision...Well, Zuke's got her attention with "100% Grass-fed New Zealand Beef" as the first ingredient, with only a few natural flavorings to add to the "crazy good" taste of pure dried beef. Although Parental Unit doesn't eat much meat, when she does, it's exclusively free-range and grass-fed—she's long known the superior quality, nutritional value and taste of pasture raised meat. And I, of course, deserve no less.

Parental Unit thinks these treats are so special she even set the table for me...The plate is holding a combination of  Zuke's Genuine Jerky Treat recipes.

She also thinks she's going to get away with giving me just one (hehehe). By the way, don't expect long jerky strips, these treats are presented in nicely-sized pieces, perfect for training...or just because.

Hmmm...here's what the plate looks like.

                                       I'll eat my fill!

Oops! Parental Unit waited for a good photo a bit too long...We're both happy I didn't drag the plate onto the floor!

But wait, there's more... Please take a few minutes to read Zuke's founding story and company philosophies—they're celebrating their 20th anniversary this year! Zuke's also donates a portion of every sale to the Dog and Cat Cancer Fund—#FueltheLove, #FueltheCure!

                         Now on to our giveaway!

One lucky Bocci's Beefs reader will win a trio of Zuke's Genuine Jerky Beef treats!

                    Please follow the Rafflecopter directions.
