Kurgo Loft Dog Jacket Review And Giveaway!

The weather outside is already frightful in many parts of the country, and we know what January and February brings—yikes! And that means it's time to bundle up when venturing outdoors for those daily walks your pooch both needs and appreciates. Well, you humans put on a coat, hat and gloves, why wouldn't you keep your canine friend warm and comfy, too?

My new Dog Loft Jacket arrived courtesy of the good folks at Kurgo. Look who's sniffing out my jacket...you don't even go outdoors, Bella!

And here I am modeling my new (and very first) coat: aka the Kurgo Dog Loft Jacket.

What we particularly like about the design of this jacket is that it's made for both active and more sedate dogs. The cut is nice and snug around the middle and has high-ish armholes so we can run and play in comfort. It's also not too long, which adds an even greater degree of freedom and comfort, without sacrificing warmth. The design of the jacket is intended to keep our "cores" warm— our chest and the middle of our body where all those important organs are! Of course, you pooch still needs to keep warm and comfortable during a leisurely stroll around the block, and this jacket does that, too.

Our backyard during the season's first snow is the perfect place to test my new jacket!

The jacket is a reversible, quilted shell made of "Microtomic®" Ripstop material that's both lightweight and waterproof. It even has reflective piping for visibility, a two-way zipper to include harness attachments and 140g Polytech fill for warmth. Parental Unit says it's also super easy to put on because of the two, velcro-like side adjustment points that allow a perfect fit—no complicated buckles or straps...and it's even machine washable!

I do prefer cold weather!

We picked the Chili Red and Dark Charcoal color in a size small. Here in the heart of Buckeye country, though, we call it "Scarlet and Gray". I'll be all ready for the holidays and the big Ohio State game! With chapters like "How to Make A Turkey Happy" (hint: it does not involved being roasted and basted for the Thanksgiving table), "Adopt, Don't Shop" that makes an eloquent case for adoption, and "Living in Harmony with Our Burrowing Buddies, we learn how to live in harmony with the fascinating array of creatures who share our world.

The book also includes "Stewart Family Traditions" that describe how you might involve your entire clan in caring for animals (Ms. Stewart is the spouse of Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, and their New Jersey farm property is slated to become an animal sanctuary and educational center). The chapters also include numerous DIY projects (think bee house, frog sanctuary or simple cat toys), and even recipes your four-legged friends will enjoy—horse cookies, anyone?

As Ms. Stewart said when discussing the plight of carriage horses: "It is possible to find joy in and inspiration from animals without their having to suffer for it." And that sums up what this book shows us with gentleness and humor: we can make simple changes in our lives that demonstrate compassion and caring for our fellow living creatures—and role model these behaviors for our children.

By the way, you don't have to own or even live near a farm sanctuary to help. You can sponsor a farm animal just like you sponsor dogs and cats at your local shelter! For example, check out Farm Sanctuary and learn how you can "adopt" the rescued farm animal of your choice and even receive a certificate of adoption and a photo of your new farm friend. Zuke's Latest Treats: Genuine Beef Jerky Trio Giveaway!

You know we're a fan of Zuke's and have brought you a number of Zuke's treat giveaways in the past. Thanks to Zuke's generosity, we recently received three packages of Zuke's Genuine Jerky Beef Treats, one in each delicious flavor, for our review. Here's my trio of treats—notice who's sniffin' things out already. Full disclosure: I've eaten almost a full bag, so I know how delicious they are!

You also know how Parental Unit loves to examine ingredients for both her food and mine with microscopic precision...Well, Zuke's got her attention with "100% Grass-fed New Zealand Beef" as the first ingredient, with only a few natural flavorings to add to the "crazy good" taste of pure dried beef. Although Parental Unit doesn't eat much meat, when she does, it's exclusively free-range and grass-fed—she's long known the superior quality, nutritional value and taste of pasture raised meat. And I, of course, deserve no less.

Parental Unit thinks these treats are so special she even set the table for me...The plate is holding a combination of Zuke's Genuine Jerky Treat recipes.

She also thinks she's going to get away with giving me just one (hehehe). By the way, don't expect long jerky strips, these treats are presented in nicely-sized pieces, perfect for training...or just because.

Celebrate ASPCA/Rachel Ray's 100K Challenge Winners With Gigantic Giveaway!

The Grand Prize winner of this year's ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge: The Central California SPCA in Fresno! Let's all put our paws together in a round of applause for this amazing group—and for all of the other winners, too!

The fifth and final ASPCA Rachel Ray 100K Challenge is officially one for the history books. And what a glorious history of saving lives it is! Animal shelters from all over the country work for three months to increase their adoption numbers over the same time the previous year, with the added incentive of a donation of $100,000 to the winning shelter, plus lots of other prizes. This year the combined total of lives saved is a whopping 68,805 in just 90 short days—that's more that twice the increases when the challenge began in 2010. And here's one more figure: In the challenge's five years, the competing shelters saved more than a quarter of a million lives!

Kudos to both Rachel Ray and the ASPCA for collaborating on this massive effort to find so many shelter animals loving, forever homes! But here's the best part: The extraordinary success of the participating shelters is proof that it can be done. Euthanasia rates can be drastically reduced with collaborative community efforts and lots of hard work. And it can happen at any animal shelter in the world. There are no excuses.
