The Homeless And Their Pets

We thought this CNN report on volunteer veterinarians helping the pets of the homeless in Portland, Oregon was especially touching. One of the problems, particularly for the newly homeless, is that a person cannot stay in a shelter with a pet of any kind. So these people, who have lost everything, are forced to give up a family member in order to have a temporary roof over their head. One of the couples interviewed in this piece is sleeping in a tent, rather than abandon their dog. Thankfully, many of these animals are at least receiving necessary medial care thanks to these generous veterinarians.

What do you think? Should people have to give up their pets to stay in a homeless shelter?

My mom says she would not give me up for any reason!
Glad those pets are getting vet attention.
Take care

This breaks my heart. Mama works in downtown Chicago and often sees homeless people with animals. Several of the Chicago shelters (including Red Door my shelter) have pet food pantries for homeless and low income pet owners. We also have several free clinics for spay/neuter, vaccines. It's a start, but as more and more people face homelessness, more and more animals are out on the street as well.

I wish that homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters allowed people to bring their pets in. I know that some do... and I believe that Pets of the Homeless have done some advocating.... I hope that more shelters realize how important the human-animal bond is and help to preserve it.

for me the answer is simple. i would sleep outside on the ground rather than take shelter for any reason without my 2 dogs. my dogs are so dependent on me i could never let them down and give them up to the unknown and risk of being killed. i would gladly spend my last cent to make sure they were okay. my heart breaks for the animals that are given up after establishing their home. Blessing & prayers for those who stand by their best friends!

Every time I read a story about anyone having to give up their pets either due to homelessness from financial issues, or natural disaster, I don't feel that any person should have to give up their dog(s). I have 3 and couldn't imagine having to give any of them up if there was a problem. I am with Marilyn...I would sleep on the street before giving any of them up.

We agree with you! Parental Unit has assured me that we would both be sleeping on the street...together (with Bella in her little carrier)
