Rainy Day Activities For Your Dog...And You!

Although we still go for our doggy walks if it's raining (there's usually some part during the day when it's not too heavy of a downpour), it's always wise to have some fun, body and mind engaging activities handy for your canine friends. In other words: It's important to play with your dog indoors, especially when the weather is bad and you might not be able to take a long walk. As we know, dogs are very social animals and love engaging with their humans in some fashion, whether it's a walk, a game of fetch, scent games or even massages—as long as you're involved, they're happy.

Our good friends at Dog Channel.com, Dog Fancy's online presence, came up with some great "rainy day" activities for you and your pooch, that we think are just great. As the folks at Dog Fancy say, it's all about having fun with your dog, while exercising and stimulating their body and mind. We're not all couch potatoes you know!

Oh, do we love Underwater Dogs by award-winning photographer and animal rights activist, Seth Casteel. And we're so excited to be able to give a hardcover copy to one lucky reader! First, is this a great idea, or what? We know more than a few pet photographers are kicking themselves-who wouldn't want to hit an untapped niche and generate a New York Times runaway bestseller?  And in the book's introduction, Casteel reveals how he happened upon this idea and then just ran (or should we say "swam") with it. And as with all great works of art, it teaches us something about ourselves: "Underwater, dogs show vividly what retrieving means to them...[and] they teach us that if you just jump in, you might have fun along the way."

The book showcases more than 80 portraits of dogs of varying ages and breeds that have taken the plunge-after a ball, ring, or perhaps something invisible that draws them under the water, wide-eyed and mouths usually wide open and straining toward a prize. What it shows us, quite literally, is a side of dogs we've not seen before. Although canines have been happily domesticated for thousands of years, Casteel says that "...they also have a primitive side, and they jump at the chance to get in touch with their wild instincts", which are on full display in each of these portraits.

Underwater Dogs has been called "visually sumptuous" and "a great coffee table book", but we don't recommend that you leave it all alone on the living room coffee table for very long-it's a book that you'll love to open over and over to lift your spirits and remind you why you share your home with a dog.
