The "Puppy Savior": Ohio Man Has Driven Over One Million Miles Saving Dogs

Greg Mahle drives 4200 miles every other week to connect abandoned dogs with loving homes.

Sit back, relax and enjoy this joyful story...and then make a plan to see what you can do in your neck of the woods to help animals in need. We all can't be like Greg Mahle, who makes a 4,200 mile trip every two weeks picking up and transporting dogs to their forever homes. But he's not alone in this endeavor: "An army of volunteers show up at each stop to help walk and feed 74 dogs." One of the faithful volunteers says, "He is a doggie savior. That's why we come."

The Today Show's "American Story" segment featured Mahle's rescue travels just this week, and beautifully describes some of the canine lives he's saved, and the human families he's helped make complete. The great part of this story, we think, is that for every human that disposes of a dog like they're trash, there are so many others willing to donate their energy and time to help save those same lives.

Quick! Adopt That Dog!

While the debate continues over the best way to save the millions of dogs who are euthanized each year in shelters: promote adoption, promote spay/neuter (how about a hefty helping of both?), we've got a new trend brewing, borrowed from humans and their quest to find a mate and to find one quickly: speed dating!
Watch this clip from the Today Show to see some homeless pooches being prepped for their big night out. The affair includes mellow music, wine and cheese...and a whirlwind meet and greet.

While it's probably fun for everyone involved (I'm guessing the dogs got some tasty treats and lots of attention), the "speed" part is no joke. As we all know, finding the right home for an orphaned animal, and finding it quickly, is often a matter of life and death.

So what do you think? Is this kind of event helpful to promote dog adoption, or should humans take a little more time deciding on the right pooch for them?

As always, we appreciate your support and comments!

Chaser On The Today show

Remember the post we wrote last month on Chaser, that super-smart Border Collie that knows 1,022 nouns? Don't fret if you missed it, check it out now: boccibeefs.blogspot.com/2011/01/chaser-border-collie-1022-proper-nouns.html

Anyway, Chaser, his owner, and the scientist who's trying to make sense of this remarkable dog's learning skills were on the Today show just a few days ago. We thought it was worthy of a few minutes of your time to watch-as Matt Lauer said, "This isn't dog tricks, this is science."

What do you think: "tricks" or real learning? We'd love to hear your opinions!
