Blue Buffalo Home 4 The Holidays: There's Still Time To Spread The Good Word!

This is the first year that Blue Buffalo has teamed with the Helen Woodward Animal Center to help orphaned animals find loving homes for the 14th annual Home 4 the Holidays Campaign. Mike Arms, President of the Helen Woodward Animal Center started the Home 4 the Holidays Campaign in 1999, and since that time, thousands of shelter partners around the world have helped over 8 million pets find loving forever homes. The campaign also encourages those wanting to add a new furry family member to  adopt from their local animal organization rather than purchasing a pet from a backyard breeder, puppy mill or pet store. And perhaps even more importantly, this campaign provides animal organizations with vital marketing information and guidance to encourage pet adoption.

The campaign typically runs from the beginning of October through January 3 of the following year, timed to coincide with the holiday season—when people are most likely to add a pet to their household. It's also timed to directly compete with the largest sales period for pet stores. So if more people "adopt don't shop" during the holidays, the market for puppies produced by unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills is greatly reduced.

There's still time to spread the good word about this worthy campaign, so please share this post or any of the linked information with your readers, friends and family.  And while you're at it, check out Helen Woodward Animal Center's "Most Heartwarming Story Contest"  and enjoy reading these adoption success stories from participating shelters.

Here's our hero in the pet rescue world, Mike Arms, talking about this years Home 4 the Holidays Campaign.

Remember Me Thursday

Light A Candle to Save A Life

We just learned of this very special event taking place today! The creator of this "awareness movement" is none other than one of our heroes, Mike Arms, the president of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. We've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Arms and interviewing him numerous times for Bocci' Beefs-he's also the creator of the wildly successful, Iams Home 4 The Holidays annual adoption campaign and the International Pet Adoptathon.

So it makes sense that he's come up with yet another way to call attention to the plight of homeless animals worldwide, with a "Remember Me Thursday" pet candle lighting ceremony (real or virtual!). The lit candles will "honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home, and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption."

According to the latest statistics from the Humane Society of the United States, only 30% of pets in U.S. households come from rescue facilities, and each year, over 3.4 million beautiful, orphaned shelter pets lose their lives without finding their forever home: Their only crime? No one to adopt them.

We implore you to light a candle today to honor the shelter pets who are no longer with us, and to chat with your friends and family about adopting their next pet. And don't forget to spread the good word  on all of your social media channels, using the Twitter hashtag #LightForPets. And the campaign even has suggested social media shout-outs for your to use! As Mike Arms frequently says (and we're paraphrasing here), orphaned animals don't need your love, they need your brains, to help place them with loving, forever homes.

Take a few minutes to enjoy this video produced by the Remember Me Thursday Campaign, and then off to work on behalf of shelter animals you go!

Sunday's "Living With Your Pet" Tips: A Mutt By Any Other Name...

Fabulous photo of me by John Clark of Clark Creative

This article titled "In Defense of the Word Mutt",  posted just recently on Dog Fancy's website, dogchannel.com, is what we'd call a real conversation starter-just maybe not at a fancy cocktail party. Although this article doesn't discuss standard pet care tips, it might give humans some food for thought when it comes to evaluating "what's in a name". A lot, we think.

The title of the article might be misleading because it suggests (at least to us), that the term "mutt" might best be left in the dustbin of history, in favor of a more flattering word-one that will make humans think they've gotten a real prize when they adopt a mixed breed from their local shelter, for example.

We all know that the language we use when referring to both humans and animals is mighty important, and often shows how we (really) feel about them. (Take heed Paula Deen!)
As this piece points out, 75% of dogs that end up in shelters are "mutts", and just maybe, what we call them may have something to do with how we value them....and why they're three times more likely to end up in shelters than "purebreds".

Mike Arms, the president of Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego, and one of our heroes in the animal welfare world, is adamant that how we describe and price (no "sales on seniors"), these "beautiful orphaned animals", help shape how we value them, and in turn, might encourage adoption of shelter pets. By the way, the Helen Woodward Animal Center does not use the word "mutt" or "mixed breed", but prefers "blend" to describe their pups of undetermined breed.

So what do you think? Will a change of words help us to place a higher value on mixed breed dogs? It's interesting, too, that we don't use the words "mongrel" or "cur" anymore...

Iams Home 4 The Holidays Campaign: Lots Of Good News!

Just in case you're still not in the mood for Christmas, take a few minutes and watch this hilarious  video made by Iams and the Talking Animal Channel on YouTube. They put together a plethora of animals singing the classic holiday tune, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to near side-splitting effect. And here's the best part: Every "Like", "Share" and "View" means another meal donation for homeless pets in the extensive Iams shelter network, so enjoy and pass it on!

And here's some great news about this year's Iams Home 4 The Holidays Adoption Campaign: As of December 19, Iams and the Helen Woodward Animal Center have helped adopt to loving homes 843, 623 companion animals, and Iams has donated a whopping 2, 771, 898 meals to shelter animals within the extensive Home 4 The Holidays shelter network! But give yourself only a minute or two to pat them on the back, because the campaign doesn't end until January 2, 2013.  So please keep "talking it up" either in person or via social media-we need your voice!

Iams and the Helen Woodward Animal Center also had the pleasure of ringing the closing bell on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. In fact, calling attention to adoption of companion animals and service dogs was the "theme" yesterday at the Wall Street Exchange: The Eukanuba brand teamed with New York City's Bidawee shelter and Canine Companions for Independence to ring yesterday's opening bell. Here's a video of the festivities. And there's our friend, Mike Arms, president of the Helen Woodward Animal Center!

Iams Home 4 The Holidays Annual Adoption Drive!

We're thrilled to be part of Iams Home 4 the Holidays 13th annual adoption drive, that runs from October 1, 2011 through January 3, 2012, and to have the opportunity to encourage our readers to take part in helping orphaned pets find loving homes-just in time for the holidays!

But first, let's get caught up on the amazing achievements of this annual pet adoption campaign: In 1999, Mike Arms, Director of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego, California, launched this now world wide adoption drive with only 14 participating animal organizations-that year, 2,563 animals were adopted into loving homes. Thirteen years later, with more than 5.8 million pets already adopted through this campaign, 3500-plus adoption organizations from 21 countries have come together for this year's Iams Home 4 the Holidays adoption drive, with the goal of finding homes for at least 1.5 million orphaned pets.

By the way, new to the campaign this year are campaign ambassadors, NASCAR driver Ryan Newman and his wife, Krissie, who founded the Ryan Newman Foundation to educate and encourage people to spay and neuter their pets and to adopt animals from shelters and rescue centers. How wonderful that people from all walks of life come together to help animals-we love it!

Here are just a few ways you can help out this year-feel free to think of more of your own:

__ Spread the word about this adoption drive on your blog, Facebook Page and Twitter account-feel free to copy and paste this post for your blog or social media shout-outs.

__ Adopt an orphaned pet near you from one of the 3500-plus participating organizations-go for it! **Everyone who adopts through this program will receive an Iams adoption kit brimming with helpful information to prepare them for their new family member, along with coupons for pet food and pet products, galore!**

__ New this year is Iams' Bags 4 Bowls Program: Just visit Iams Facebook Page and "Like" the page, photos, videos and posts (see my smiling face there!) For every "Like" they receive, Iams will donate a meal to a homeless animal. Their goal this year is to donate five million meals to animals in need!

__ You can also create a custom adoption announcement or holiday card to share your new four-legged family member with friends and family-for each card created and shared, Iams will donate a meal. More details on these custom cards coming soon to Bocci's Beefs!

__ And wait, there's more! If you purchase any specially-marked packages of Iams dog or cat food for the duration of this adoption campaign ( October 1, 2011-January 3, 2012), Iams will donate one bowl of food for each package sold to a participating Iams Home 4 the Holidays organization.

Please feel free to contact me with any ideas on how we all can help make this 13th year of the Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign a raging success-and we'd love to hear how you participate!

Let's Hear It For Us Mutts!

Or mixed breeds, or "blends" as Mike Arms, president of Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego likes to call us. Whatever name you choose, there sure are a lot of us. And it seems, unfortunately, that somehow we seem to end up in animal shelters. Go figure. According to statistics from www.muttigrees.org, an organization formed to help us mutts, "there are 50 million mixed breed dogs in the U.S. today..., and three out of every four shelter dogs are mixed breeds." Yikes!

Now, we want this to be perfectly clear: we have nothing against purebred dogs. In fact, some of our best friends are purebreds (hehehe). And Parental Unit has always had purebred dogs in the past-until I came along, that is. Of course, the idea these days is to get your purebred pooches from either rescue groups or responsible breeders, of which there are many. So, we love you our purebred friends!

But there's another interesting angle to the story: it seems that, as the dogs go, so goes the country. In an article in yesterday's New York Times, titled: "Black? White? Asian? More Young Americans Choose All of the Above", we learned that "blends" are all the rage among humans too!  According to this article, "The crop of students moving through college right now includes the largest group of mixed race people ever to come of age in the United States, and they are only the vanguard: the country is in the midst of a demographic shift driven by immigration and intermarriage." Read the full article here: www.nytimes.com/2011/01/30/us/30mixed.html.

Now we happen to think this is a good thing. We love the idea of all sorts of ethnicities, religions, races (and dog breeds) uniting in marriage, procreation and whatever else they'd like to unite in. And it's high time that humans started emulating us dogs, which I'm sure is what's happening. I mean, we've been listening to you folks for centuries-the tables are finally turned!

And speaking of mutts, is this a face to love, or what?

Tell us what you think-we'd love to hear from ya!

Iams Home 4 The Holidays Rings Closing Bell @ NY Stock Exchange!

In case you hadn't heard, orphaned dogs and cats along with representatives of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, Bidawee, and Iams Home 4 The Holidays rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on December 23rd-just in time to call attention to the millions of orphaned pets available for adoption over the holidays, and throughout the year.

Here they are ringing that bell!

And here's Jane, a recently adopted pooch.

Keep in mind that Iams Home 4 The Holidays Adoption Drive only runs through Tuesday January 4th, 2011, so please do what you can to promote this great cause. Who doesn't want to help orphaned animals find forever homes? To learn more about this wonderful adoption drive, check out: Iamshome4theholidays.com or www.facebook.com/iams.

Meanwhile, take a gander at Iams Home 4 The Hoildays' adoption statistics as of December 23rd:

Dogs/puppies- 467,015
Cats/Kittens- 394, 579
Other-17,222
That's a total of 878, 812 adoptions since October 1st, and their goal for this year's adoption drive is to place 1.5 million orphaned pets with loving homes.

How 'bout we make an effort here in the last week to do something together to reach or exceed this goal?

Both Bella and I were once orphaned animals, but now we're resting comfortably (livin' the high life, really) in our happy home. So what can we do for those not as fortunate? We'd love to hear your ideas!

A Wonderful Post On Our Direct Link To Puppy Mills

When Parental Unit and I see a well written post, you know how we like to pass it on to our readers...:-)
Well, our good friend (and my personal photographer), Rachel, from www.rachellaurenphotography.com, wrote a fabulous piece eloquently explaining the connection between our "buying habits" and keeping those dastardly puppy mills in business, that she aptly titled: Before You Buy That Christmas Puppy.

Please take the time to read that post right here: rachellaurenphotography.blogspot.com/2010/11/before-you-buy-that-christmas-puppy.html

You all might recall that we are part of Iam's Home 4 The Holidays program that promotes adoption from shelters at this time of year. Mike Arms, the founder of this program, and the President of the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, has made a point of saying (and we're paraphrasing here) that puppy mills make enough money during the holiday season to sustain their businesses for the rest of the year. His goal, through the Iams Home 4 The Holidays program, is to take away that seasonal business and hopefully put puppy mills out of business for good!

So, if you really want to give a dog or cat for the holidays, remember: Adopt, don't shop!

As always, thanks so much for your support-it means a lot to us:-)!

Really, it does...I'm just a little tired today, so I don't look very enthusiastic...
