National Walk Your Dog Week!

I'm ready to go for a walk, Parental Unit! And I'll even carry a few of my own supplies (treats, perhaps?) so I can have a job and burn more calories.

Who knew that this week ( October 1-7) is National Walk Your Dog Week? Well, we all do now! And we're thrilled to call your attention to this important activity: It's crucial to the health and happiness of both your pet and you, to walk your dog every day. Letting your dog out in the yard, if you're lucky enough to have one, is simply not enough physical and mental stimulation for most dogs. And besides, canines are traveling animals, so walking many miles each day (with their pack leader, of course) is their natural state of being.

In preparation for National Walk Your Dog Week, our good friends at Pet360 surveyed more than 4,000 dog owners to find out how often the average canine is walked by a human companion. And the results are, frankly, a tad disappointing. According to the survey, only 56 percent of dog owners walk their dog at least once per day. What's up with that? And a horrifying 33 percent of the survey's respondents admitted they rarely take their dogs for a walk.
Parental Unit claims she learned the hard way, that all dogs need more physical and mental stimulation than we think. She still regrets that my predecessor, Carson, a high energy Wire Fox Terrier, didn't get nearly enough exercise for his energy level. Although she took him for one or two fairly short walks every day, that wasn't nearly enough...and lots of destruction and unhappiness ensued. She feels guilty to this day, and firmly believes that her own lack of knowledge and inaction made for a less than optimal life for dear Carson.

But the good news is that she's more than made up for that with me! In over six years, we've only missed two days of long walks, and both were because of ice storms. Even last year's trio of polar vortex hits didn't keep us indoors! But enough about us..

To encourage pet owners to hit the ground running or walking with their four-legged friends this fall, Pet360 has pulled together the Top Five Benefits of Walking Your Dog. The bottom line? Daily walks with your best furfriend provide huge physical and mental benefits for your both. And away you go!

1.    Promotes Weight Control & Digestive Health – An overweight pet is an unhealthy pet. In addition to regulating your dog’s diet, regular exercise will keep your pet fit, agile, and limber. Daily walks also support your pet’s digestive health and aid in relieving occasional constipation.

2.    Alleviates Destructive Behavior & Hyperactivity – Hitting the pavement with your pup can help reduce or eliminate your pet’s destructive chewing, digging, or scratching. Pets are like children—if you don’t give them something constructive to do, they might take matters into their own paws. Evening walks can also help alleviate pent up energy, helping your dog feel more relaxed at bedtime. Be sure to follow these nighttime safety tips to make sure both you and your pet are protected.

3.    Strengthens Your Bond – Spending quality time together is extremely important to your dog’s behavioral development. Daily walks help strengthen your bond and promote a trusting relationship.

4.    Encourages Socialization – If you have a timid or fearful pet, strolling around the neighborhood can help your pooch build confidence and trust. Walks expose your pet to other humans and animals, which will help him or her adapt to new or intimidating situations. Check out these tips for ensuring stress-free walks with your dog.

5.    Helps Your Health, Too – Walking a pet is sometimes regarded as a chore, but it should be thought of as a way for you and your canine to stay active. Getting outdoors with your pup in tow is beneficial for all involved and may even help you shed a few pounds in the process.

Here's to your good health and happiness!

Emergency First Aid Tips For Pet Owners

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has generously compiled these detailed strategies (they're really more than "tips") for how you can help your dog or cat in an emergency. The AVMA clearly notes, though, that these are emergency procedures that can help save your pet's life, but do not substitute for veterinary care. It's what you are prepared to do before you get your ill or injured pet to your veterinarian or an emergency clinic.

The strategies include plans for first aid supplies, handling an injured pet, disaster planning and basic first aid procedures, with links that provide more detailed information on each topic.

We think this information is perfect to print and save. Please share your pet first aid tips with us—we'd love to hear them!

Meet "Luna" the Dog Star Of "Hector and the Search For Happiness"...and Lassie, Too!

Lassie and Luna at the Best Friend's Strut Your Mutt Festival in Los Angeles.

"Hector and the Search for Happiness", which opened in theaters last weekend, is more than just another adventure flick. Screen heavy weights like Christopher Plummer and Toni Collette help the main character, played by Simon Pegg, along his globe-trotting journey to find the secret to happiness. But wait, there's more! A little Boston Terrier named Luna (see adorable photo above)  joins the cast as the film's dog star.

And Luna lends her paw to more than film work—she took part in the Best Friends Animal Society's, Los Angles Strut Your Mutt fundraising walk, an annual event that calls attention to the millions of dogs in shelters across the country and raises money to help these dogs find loving homes. Oh, and look who stopped by to mug with Luna!

Hope you enjoy Hector and Luna! And don't forget to check out the annual Strut Your Mutt Festival (it takes place in various places around the country in addition to a virtual campaign) to help out your local shelter.

Sunday's "Living With Your Pet Tips": Fall Care Guide For You And Your Pets

                                    Fall is in the air!

And these autumnal pet care and pet safety tips from Better Homes and Gardens, complete with adorable slide show, will help you and your furkids be prepared for anything this gorgeous season brings your way. This Tuesday, September 23rd is the Autumn equinox, so these tips are quite timely.
(It also happens to be Bruce Springsteen's 65th birthday, but perhaps that's for another post...or another blog!)

It never hurts to be reminded that back-to-school supplies, like markers and glue, are toxic to pets, and that you should remind your kids to keep their supplies stored safely away from Rover's reach (think open book bags on the floor). And if you're the decorating kind, make sure your pets are either trained not to touch your festive creations or such temptations are out of reach.

I've had a few digestive troubles lately, so Parental Unit has been mixing a teaspoon or so of that autumn staple, pumpkin, in my regular food, and to her and my relief, it's worked wonders. And it's delicious and full of vitamins, too!

What fall pet care or safety strategies have worked for you? Let us know!

It Doesn't Take Much To Make Dogs Happy...

Check out the joy these dogs exude when chasing a simple stick. Oh by the way, some are handicapped (or differently abled), but it matters not!
Hope this short video makes your day like it did ours!

Mealtime Is The Time To #GetHealthyHappy !

                             Did someone say "mealtime"?

The old adage, "You are what you eat", really isn't so old anymore, because the current science of nutrition has finally caught up with what grandma always knew. Proper nutrition for both humans and pets affects not just how long we live, but our quality of life, too. And we want to feel great every day, don't we?

In addition to regular veterinary visits, you pet parents should make sure that your furry companions are getting the right kind and amount of food for their age and activity levels. The good folks at Hills  have done all of the hard work to ensure that each of their pet foods meet only the highest dog nutrition and cat nutrition standards. Just like humans, we pets have different nutritional needs for the various stages of our lives, and nutritionally balanced pet food will make all the difference in how we feel, from puppy or "kitten hood" straight through to our senior years.

Hills even makes a grain free formula, available for both dogs and cats.

We know there are lots of tips available to help you choose the right food for your pet, but we've culled a few of the best strategies to share with you:

1. You should probably have a chat with your veterinarian, who can help guide you to the right foods for you pets' life stage and life style. (Don't forget that Hills Science Diet is giving away a $100 credit towards a veterinary visit every day for 90 days to help your pets #gethealthyhappy!)

2.  Consider specially formulated foods that cater to your pets' specific needs. Choosing the right food can help manage certain health conditions, for example. And whether you're pet parent to a couch potato or canine athlete, there can be specific nutritional needs for the more or less active dog or kitty. Check with your vet on this one, too!

3. Transition foods slowly. If you choose to change pet foods, remember to gradually transition to the new food—it takes at least a full seven days to successfully change your pets' diet and avoid stomach upset or digestive issues.

To help call attention to your pets' specific nutritional needs and get your pets on their way to happy and healthy, Hills is offering a $10 rebate for select Hills Science Diet products.

The ASPCA Wants To Know: Are You And Your Pets Prepared? #NatlPrep

An ASPCA Google+Hangout just for you and your pets!

You can never be too prepared! That's been our motto here at Bocci's Beefs from the beginning, and we're proud to tout the various strategies for ensuring that you and all of your pets stay safe and healthy in case of an emergency or natural disaster. And what better time to stress the importance of preparation and practice than National Disaster Preparedness Month? Yes, September is full of fun, back to school activities and lots of outdoor time before cold weather sets in, but September is also National Disaster Preparedness Month, and the ASPCA is here to help you and your family plan for an emergency. If you have to evacuate your home, you want to be prepared for just about anything, and that includes taking your beloved pets with you or planning for designated caregivers.

The first item on the agenda is to make sure you have Rescue Alert stickers prominently placed in your home windows. Just in case disaster strikes when you're not home, emergency officials must know if pets remain in the house.

The ASPCA's detailed Disaster Preparedness Plan will help you: Arrange a "Safe Haven" for your pets, if necessary (Not all Red Cross Disaster Relief Shelters accept pets), pull together an emergency supply and traveling kit, and prepare for an evacuation. The ASPCA plan even provides information  specifically for small pets, birds and reptiles.

Don't forget ASPCA's Mobile App for pet owners that allows you to store all sorts of useful data about your pets, like medical records, and provides tons of emergency-specific strategies all in one handy place. And in case your pet is lost, this app also allows you to create a customized digital "Lost Pet" flyer.

One more cool thing to help you prepare: The ASPCA is hosting a Google+ Hangout to answer all of your emergency planning questions on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 7-8pm EST. Don't miss this fun and informative hour—it could help you save lives!

National Preparedness Month: Four Top Pet Protection Strategies From Pet 360

Our good friends at Pet 360 recently conducted a survey of over 5,000 pet owners to understand just how many of you are adequately prepared to face a disaster or emergency evacuation with your pets. It turns out that the numbers could certainly improve! In the interest of full disclosure, Parental Unit counts herself among those not prepared for a disaster or evacuation for herself and for Bella and me.

Hey, we need to come, too!

In fact, 13% of those surveyed had already been through a disaster or emergency evacuation with their pets—so the danger is real. And of those 13%, a whopping 12% were actually separated from their pets during the emergency. The survey also shows that most pet owners simply aren't prepared for a disaster: 46% do not have an emergency plan in place for their pets; less than 35% have an emergency kit specifically for their pets; and 63% don't even have pet alert stickers in their windows.

But help is on the way! Pet 360, along with Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, have created "The Four  P's of Pet Preparedness".  We suggest that you print these out and have your Parental Units gather the following information and supplies, so your entire family is prepared in case emergency strikes. And what better time to get crackin' than National Preparedness Month?

1.    Plan ahead – Many local and state health and safety regulations do not allow pets to accompany their owners to disaster shelters (Philadelphia DOES allow pets in disaster shelters). Determine the best evacuation plan, including where to go and how to get your pets there safely. Follow this emergency planning checklist, and you’ll be well-prepared.
2.    Practice with your pets – The first step of any pet evacuation plan is to quickly and safely remove your pet from harm’s way. Your pet may be inclined to run and hide when disaster strikes, so be sure to rehearse a "come" command with your dog and identify a reliable way to find your cat, maybe by opening a can of food. Also practice putting your cat in a carrier and getting your dog in and out of the car. The more you practice, the more comfortable they'll be.
3.    Pack an emergency kit – Assembling an emergency go-kit well in advance of a disaster will ensure nothing gets left behind. Your pet emergency kit should include first aid supplies, proof of ownership, vaccination history, and at least one of your pet’s favorite toys or blankets. Not sure what else to pack? Check out Pet360's top 10 pet emergency kit items.
4.    Protect your pets when they’re home alone – Disasters can strike when you’re not home. Display a Pet Alert sticker on your front door or window to let first responders know how many pets are inside. Remember to include your veterinarian’s contact information.

Kudos to Pet 360 and the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team for this spot-on information!

Cat Helpers Continued...

Wasn't it just last week that we shared a video of a feline "helping" sort the laundry? Well, to drive home just how important a cat's services can be around the house, enjoy this video of kitty lending a paw at dishwashing time.

Note to self: That looks like even more fun than scattering Parental Unit's papers...

A Veterinarian's Perspective On Our Canine 9/11 Heroes

Denise Corliss and Bretagne, a Golden Retriever, both helped at Ground Zero. Beautiful Bretagne is still alive today and is a finalist for the American Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards!

Kudos to DogTime Media for this pitch-perfect piece on the canine heroes of 9/11, and the veterinarian, Dr. Cindy Otto, who tended to the Ground Zero working dogs for 10 days following the attacks.  We all owe a huge debt to the countless humans and approximately 900 trained service dogs who gave their time and risked their lives to help so many in need on that horrific day, and for the months and years afterward.

What we didn't know were the results of studies conducted on both the humans and animals who served  at Ground Zero. Although the reasons are not clear, there are differences in the way the human body reacted to the onsite debris and dust and the way a canine"s body reacted. Although the human workers at Ground Zero had higher incidents of cancer rates in the following years, the dogs did not, at least according to one study directed by Dr. Otto and  funded by the AKC's Canine Health Foundation.

Dr. Otto also founded Penn Vet Working Dog Center in 2007 to " Enhance research and training" for all working dogs, with thej ultimate goal to make their lives better. A hearty thank you to Dr. Otto for not only her work at Ground Zero, but for following through on her passion for all working dogs.

Pets Fill The Void...And More

                       Beautiful illustration by Sarah Jacoby

We hope you enjoy this sweet, poignant essay, recently posted on The New York Times "Menagerie" blog. It's a beautiful piece of writing, and says so much about the human need to connect with other humans and other species. And so many times those connections are made through the mutual love of a pet.

"LIving With Your Pet" Tips: Finding The Right Veterinarian

Me and my vet, Dr. Mike

Since we've written just recently about the importance of regular vet checkups, we thought it was important to share these strategies for choosing the right veterinarian for you and your family, courtesy of Cesar's Way.  We think they really hit the mark!

Let's put it this way: While convenience (proximity to your home and extended office hours), along with pricing are important, you should also consider several more substantive factors. For example, why not schedule a brief consultation prior to a full-blown office visit, so you can see how your pets react to the office atmosphere, the vet techs and staff and the veterinarian. Bring a short list of questions so you can get an idea of the vet's philosophies on wellness care and disease treatment.

And here's our special recommendation: Ask what the office policy is for emergencies that occur during regular office hours. It's important to know whether you'll be able to rush your pet in for a minor emergency and be treated promptly.

You might also want to get recommendations from friends, local breeders or shelters and rescues, and interview several veterinarians. While you can always change vets, you don't want to have to do so because of a spat or a lack of comfortable rapport between you. So it's best to choose carefully the first time around.

Let us know how you chose your pets' veterinarian and any tips you might add to our list. We'd love to hear your stories!

Why Regular Vet Visits Help Your Pets #GetHealthyHappy !

We all know the benefits of preventative care, both for ourselves and our beloved pets. But there are countless reasons we don't always follow through. For the sake of our pets living longer, healthier and happier lives, though, we have to make the effort. Unfortunately, according to a recent poll by PetMD, nearly two in ten pet owners had not visited their vet for a routine check-up in the past year, and a whopping 26% of dog owners don't visit their vet until their pet is sick.

Why is that a big "Oops"? Because pets age faster than humans, so skipping even one annual veterinary exam is like you humans missing five years of check-ups! From that perspective, we can start to see how missing your pets' annual checkup could lead to future medical issues. In fact, Dr. Ashley Gallagher, a veterinarian at the Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C., says that "Annual checkups also allow your vet to more easily spot problems at their earliest stages, when they can often be handled simply and cost effectively." How does that translates into dollars and cents: The American Pet products Association's 2013-1014 survey reports that while routine vet visits average $231, emergency visits average $314 and illness visits "$364. That's quite a jump!

Speaking only for me, I visited my vet twice this year— once in early spring to have my heart worm test, and just a few weeks ago to have my complete checkup and vaccines.

Here I am making nice with Dr. Mike, my longtime veterinarian. He always sits on the floor and plays with me first, while sneaking in a bit of the exam. (I can never figure out why he smells my ears, can you?)

And you've got to get your heart and lungs checked, don't you?

Where's my post-exam treat, Dr. Mike?

You can  get the most for your money by bringing a list of questions to your annual visit, so your veterinarian will give your humans tips on maintaining a healthy weight, proper dental hygiene and more. That's also one of the benefits of establishing a long term relationship with a vet you trust—he or she will become familiar with your pets and better able to more easily spot anything different about their health.

And we can't think of a better way to jump start your regular vet visits than with a credit toward your next exam. That's why we're excited to announce that Hills Science Diet is giving away $100 toward a vet check up, every day for 90 days, to allow more pet owners the chance to enjoy annual checkups for their pet!

Just visit http://www.hillspet.com/healthy-pets-happy-life.html, choose "Healthy Happy Dogs" or "Healthy Happy Cats",  complete the short entry form and you're on your way to #GetHealthyHappy!

Dogs Rule...Nonchalantly: Review and Giveway!

Oh, the places you'll go when you read this amazing book, Dogs Rule Nonchalantly, by award-winning artist/illustrator, Mark Ulriksen. You will be transported to all the places you've gone with dogs of childhood past, and the adventures you'll have with the four-legged companion resting beside you. Because that's what great artists do—they capture the spirit of the person  place and time, and you feel, well, everything.

And that's exactly what Ulriksen has done in Dogs Rule Nonchalantly. Just look at the pooch on the cover, one of Ulriksen's dogs named Henry—he's ready to bounce off the page for a big, slobbery hug and a game of fetch. And it's the same for all of the book's 67 paintings that capture Ulriksen, his wife and child, their cats, and of course, a myriad of dogs. They all come alive for the reader, complete with their own little stories and quirks. As the author says: " A dog's life is filled with simple pleasures: playing roaming, carousing, exploring, conquering and, most importantly, loving. They do it all with vigor and gusto." We think they do it all just to please us.

Ulriksen's illustrations and paintings have graced the covers of countless New Yorker's, and reside in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress. And now they're captured in this little gem of a book for dog aficionados of all ages. We agree that "Everything's better with a dog." How about you?

Disclosure: I received one copy of this book for review and one to giveaway. My opinions cannot be swayed by two, or even three books (four, maybe).

Let's Celebrate Our Canine Co-Workers This Labor Day!

We kinda liked this Labor Day Post from last year, so we thought there would be no harm in re-posting it for Labor Day 2014.
Each year on Labor Day, we've saluted not only the hard working woman and men of our country, but their canine companions, too, because we dogs work to protect our humans and their property every day of our lives. And then there are what we call the professional working dogs, like the heroic search and rescue, drug detection, service and therapy dogs and...well, you name it, and your canine companions do the work. We even win prizes for you in agility competitions!

We though we'd share a few photos of some very brave working dogs, or dogs working...or maybe just  dogs working to have fun with you!

As so many of us enjoy our day off from our labors, we urge you to take a moment to salute all of the many workers who enrich our lives just by doing their jobs. And perhaps give a nod to the physical laborer-someone who works with their hands and the sweat of their brows to bring us the food on our table, the machines we use daily to make our lives easier, among so many other products and services that we often take for granted. A happy, healthy and safe Labor Day to all!
