Remember Me Thursday

Light A Candle to Save A Life

We just learned of this very special event taking place today! The creator of this "awareness movement" is none other than one of our heroes, Mike Arms, the president of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. We've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Arms and interviewing him numerous times for Bocci' Beefs-he's also the creator of the wildly successful, Iams Home 4 The Holidays annual adoption campaign and the International Pet Adoptathon.

So it makes sense that he's come up with yet another way to call attention to the plight of homeless animals worldwide, with a "Remember Me Thursday" pet candle lighting ceremony (real or virtual!). The lit candles will "honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home, and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption."

According to the latest statistics from the Humane Society of the United States, only 30% of pets in U.S. households come from rescue facilities, and each year, over 3.4 million beautiful, orphaned shelter pets lose their lives without finding their forever home: Their only crime? No one to adopt them.

We implore you to light a candle today to honor the shelter pets who are no longer with us, and to chat with your friends and family about adopting their next pet. And don't forget to spread the good word  on all of your social media channels, using the Twitter hashtag #LightForPets. And the campaign even has suggested social media shout-outs for your to use! As Mike Arms frequently says (and we're paraphrasing here), orphaned animals don't need your love, they need your brains, to help place them with loving, forever homes.

Take a few minutes to enjoy this video produced by the Remember Me Thursday Campaign, and then off to work on behalf of shelter animals you go!
