17th Annual Pet Adoptathon!

Did you all know that April 30 and May 1 are the official kick-off days for the Pet Adoptathon 2011?
We found this out a bit belatedly this morning as we were perusing Cesar Millan's weekly newsletter.
Read the full article discussing this event in this week's Cesar's Way newsletter right here: www.cesarsway.com/news/dognews/17thAnnualPetAdoptathonutm_source=mobilestorm&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=May11NL_1.

Here's how it works: On these two days, more than 2000 animal shelters around the world will unite with North Shore Animal League, the world's largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization, for this 36 hour, round-the-clock event to promote adoption of primarily mixed breed pets, known as "Mutt-i-grees". (More on this later) And for the first time in the 17 year history of this event, Pet Adoptathon activities will continue throughout the entire, merry, merry month of May! This year, dog behavior expert and long time advocate for pet adoption, Cesar Millan, is the official spokesperson for this year's "global extravaganza", and Purina ONE is its presenting sponsor.

As we all know by now, mixed breeds represent the majority of shelter animals around the world, and also make up the majority of those shelter animals euthanized. The term "Mutt-i-grees" also applies to a school curriculum developed by the Yale University School of the 21st Century in conjunction with Cesar Millan. This curriculum represents "an educational approach to teaching children social and emotional skills as well as highlighting the unique characteristics and needs of Mutt-i-grees awaiting adoption at a shelter." According to Millan, "The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum was created to draw attention to the desirability of rescue animals, while at the same time, helping kids to develop important life skills." We hope you make an effort to participate at some point during the month of May in any way you can. You can find a participating shelter near you by checking here: adoptathon.animal-league.org/adoptathon_shelters_2011.php.
