Stalking the Wild Squirrel - Part 4

You all know how I feel about squirrels, don't you? Yep, thought so. Good thing Parental Unit does too, because the other day she was going through some New York Times that she'd saved, and ran across this article in the Dining Section titled: "Saving A Squirrel By Eating One", that discusses the problem our British friends were having with an overabundence of gray squirrels, and their, uh, solution to the problem.
Read that full (I mean "filling") article here:
www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/dining/07squirrel.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=Marlena%20Spieler&st=cse

It seems that the Brits favor red squirrels over the gray kind, and the gray were taking over, so they decided to "cull" those dang gray squirrels by hunting them and providing them to local butchers. I almost passed out when I read that there are "literally millions of squirrels rampaging throughout England, Scotland, and Wales at any given time...".  Anyone want to hop on the next flight with me?

Anyway, instead of what we Americans call "the British invasion" (those wonderful lads from Liverpool and their progeny for which all Americans will be eternally grateful), it seems that those pesty gray squirrels were brought over from North America and are regarded as "invading interlopers that are crowding out a British icon, the indigenous red squirrel...". (Invasion indeed- and a fine thank-you for almost five decades of fabulous music!)

Back to my own backyard: I've noticed that squirrel activity is picking up-those varmits are already stocking up for the winter! So I've been on high alert for the last few days.

Here I am sniffing out the yard-they run along the top of my fencepost to get to the next tree! Don't they ever just fall off with all their scurrying?

Just missed em'!

We've got to get together on this squirrel invasion, folks! Whadaya say?

Hi Bocci - Miss Twinkie suggested that I feed the idiots to the squirrels...I thought it was good advice, but the downside is that I have to keep the squirrels around until the idiots are all gone. Do you realize how many idiots there are in the world? This is gonna take awhile:(

Lol I think we have more problems with rats then grey squirrels, and I've not seen any rats for sale to eat, but we do call grey squirrels tree rats.
The red squirrel mainly lives in pine forests, so the idea is to stop the grey squirrels from getting to them, as they are bigger and can chase them off to get the food.
I found the article quite funny the fact that it looks like we are over run with them, a bit like the plague (as I said we have more rats)

Count us in!! We are becoming pretty good as chasing those buggers down, though mommy always takes them away after we catch them. NO FAIR!! So we just won't bring mommy with us. She probably wouldn't even notice we are gone. She keeps talking about needing a vacation anyways.

One of my dogs, Mickey, goes INSANE when he sees a squirrel. He also gets a little overexcited when he sees a fluttering leaf... he has high hopes of staging a massacre I'm sure...

We've been so busy trying to defend the homefront against squirrel invasions that I don't think we have the dog-power to send reinforcements elsewhere. But we'll be sending death-ray thoughts to those other squirrel. *ahem*

Hey!!! We got your card yesterday (and really nifty business cards, BTW - we MUST get some!) - thank you so much! We'll be getting a paw-it-forward post going here soon. Thank you!!! (Even if it made Mom all sniffly about TaiChi, she was still very pleased!)

Hi Bocci! We found your blog through the Blog Hop.

Layla hates squirrels too. She's almost caught one a few times. Instead of trying to jump up and catch the squirrels as they're running along the top of the fence (our fence is the same type as yours), she's decided that if she runs really hard and body slams the fence with her shoulder, there's a 50/50 chance that the squirrels will fall into our yard.

If you decide to go overseas and "help out" with their squirrel overpopulation, I'm sure Layla would love to join you!

I'm all for it! Let's get'em I hate squirrels. I stand vigil at the back window at my house and watch them scurry around in the trees. When Mom let's me out I track them. They are EVERYWHERE! One problem -- I've never been on an airplane before. Do the flight attendants give tummy rubs?
