Sunday's "Living With Your Pet Tips": The Value Of Teaching Your Dog Tricks

Parental Unit wants me to tell you all (yet again) how much she's learned about pet parenting in the last four-plus years she's been blogging, both from the research she's done for our blog, and from all of you pet bloggers out there. There was a time, not so long ago, that Parental Unit didn't see the value in teaching a dog tricks, particularly the more complicated ones, like rolling over, standing on hind legs, dancing...you get the picture. The bottom line is that she didn't think she had enough time or patience to invest in something where she didn't see a practical benefit, like she did from the basic commands like staying sitting, coming, and so on.

Now, I still don't know any of these complicated tricks, although we're working on my turning around in a circle on command, since I do that anyway when I'm excited. But she's become a convert to trick training because there are indeed, many practical benefits. Our friends at Kyjen , detailed some of the main benefits of trick training in a recent post on their "Outward Bound" blog, and we couldn't agree more. Want to build a closer bond with your pooch, regularly engage their mind and body, and help build a fearful dog's confidence? Then teaching your pooch even the simplest of tricks like shaking hands or doing a "high five" or "high ten" (both of which I can do!), can help. And who knows, you both could find you love your training time together and go for the gold, so to speak, at contests across the country.

We hope you enjoy your Sunday and that you spend some time bonding with your pet.

Just for fun, here's a picture of me in my amazing Kyjen, "Outward Hound" backpack, which I'll look forward to wearing again on our first spring hike. Ooops, Parental Unit just swooned at the mere mention of spring...
