FDA Increases Pet Food Testing

We thought it was important to pass on this information early in the holiday season, because most of us do so much extra food handling this time of year, pet food included, and often have lots of extra human and four-legged guests in our homes.
According to this article published a few days ago in the Chicago Tribune, the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has seen fit to increase their testing for Salmanella in pet food. Why? Because people handling pet food contaminated with Salmonella can contract this sometimes deadly poisoning - over 40,000 cases were reported just last year (not all from handling pet food, of course).

Under this stepped up program, the FDA will test pet food, treats and supplements and intends to ensure that all contaminated pet food is removed from the market. In the meantime, the Center for Disease Control recommends washing your hands after feeding your pets and not letting infants near the pet's food bowl.

We think one can never be too careful when it comes to preventing food poisoning of any kind - how about you? What do you do to prevent possible food poisoning in your home?
