Global Pet Expo Glam

Photo courtesy of The New York Times

For those of us not fortunate enough to attend the Global Pet Expo in Orlando last week, we think this article in The New York Times does a great job of setting the scene and diving into some of the niftiest new pet products on display (among the 3,000 featured at the show).

The American Pet Products Association, who sponsors this massive event, says that last year alone, Americans spent 55.7 billion on their pets-and spending is only expected to increase. So with all that spending going on, why not introduce a few (thousand) new products...say, for example, hand-smocked dog dresses' rain coats with "detachable, awning-like hoods, and hundreds of toys and "enrichment products" for not only your dog, but maybe your gerbil, too.

It sounds like the Global Pet Expo was a raging success this year, and would love to hear if any of our readers managed to go. For those of us who didn't make it, enjoy the slides how that accompanies the article and let us know your favorite products!

The Pet Business Is Booming!

In the Business Section of today's New York Times, the front page article (complete with a photo of a woman poised to chomp on a dog biscuit),  gives us a peek inside the Global Pet Expo, and annual event that was held in Orlando, Florida, in April. And some of the demonstrations and products at this shindig were nothing short of eye-popping: how about trying "Neuticles", prosthetic testicles for neutered dogs and cats that go for $1000/pair, "which their designers say, 'help your pet to retain his natural look, self esteem and aids in the trauma associated with altering'."  Hoo boy, I'm not going to touch that one!

On the saner side, there was also a plethora of natural, organic and human grade pet food for the tasting...by humans and canines alike. It seems that the recession has barely touched the pet industry: last year, Americans spent a record $55 billion on their  beloved pets, and the pet products industry is betting that pet parents will continue to splurge on their furry friends. What do you think? Do you skimp on things for you, and splurge on your pets? Let us know!
