Would You Sneak Your Dog Into A Hotel?

Photo courtesy of the LA Times
How many of you travel with your pets? O.K., now's the time to fess up...how many of you have snuck your dog or kitty into a hotel room that didn't otherwise allow pets? According to this LA Times blurb posted just yesterday, 51% of pet owners said they'd bring their four-legged companion on every trip, if they could, and finding lodging that welcomes Fido or Fluffy is crucial to their travel planning. But here's the kicker: 25% of those surveyed claim they'd sneak their dog or cat in anyway. Hmmm...we think that establishments who still don't just allow, but welcome pets with open paws are missing some business!

Let us know if you've ever stuffed your pet into your luggage and walked past the bellman barking or meowing. We'd love to hear your stories!

It's Issue # 50 for Fido Friendly Magazine!

We're thrilled to be able to bring you the inside scoop about the changes a-coming to Fido Friendly magazine via our conversation with Carol Bryant, its fearless lead writer, social media and PR director and blog writer extraordinaire. She offered to help us celebrate this terrific canine travel magazine's 50th issue and launch its 11th successful year.

Remember our friend Carol and her adorable dog, Dexter from previous posts?

We just learned from speaking with Carol that with the publication of its 50th issue (July/August 2011 on newsstands soon), readers will get to see a completely revamped FIDO Friendly magazine. Examples of just two of the new features you'll be able to enjoy in each issue are: "Girlfriend Getaways" and "Day Trips". You know, there's nothing like a day away from your daily routine to refresh you and your pooch without breaking your budget (Don't fret-they won't forget that guys travel with their dogs, too.) And get this new feature: in each issue, FIDO Friendly will be going to a different city and featuring a local rescued dog, complete with a hotel photo shoot and pet products galore! And there will be lots more helpful information on rescued dog issues, too.

To compliment this new look for its print magazine, FIDO Friendly will be simultaneously launching a brand new, state-of-the-art website, so it's readers can enjoy their favorite canine travel magazine in high-tech splendor,  24/7.

But that's not all...have a look-see at the "golden girls" featured on their 50th issue.
What's not to love about America's favorite funny woman, Betty White? What Carol Bryant especially loves is that "all ages are drawn to her", and hopes that featuring Ms. White, known for her off-camera support of animal protection causes "will help animal rescue". We second that wish!

And speaking of adoption and rescue, FIDO Friendly's annual adoption bus tour, "Get Your Licks on Rt. 66",  starts up again in September, so stay tuned for more good news on the dog adoption front. This tour placed 500 pets with loving homes in its first two years!

We hope you enjoy, and as always, thanks for your support.

FIDO Friendly Magazine-Review And Give-A-Way!

Our good friends at FIDO Friendly magazine asked Parental Unit and me to do a review of the December issue of their magazine, and in return...they graciously offered to give one of our lucky readers a one year subscription to FIDO Friendly magazine!  Please see the details for entering our give-a-way at the end of this post.

So... away we go!  Here's the cover of the December 2010 issue to start us off. As you can see, the cover  duo for this issue are "Glee's" Charlotte Ross and her pooch, Tyler-the interview centers on their devotion to helping animals in need.

It just so happens that Parental Unit wrote a short "destination piece" on The Inn at Cedar Falls in Logan, Ohio, for this very issue (that we've already regaled you with), but it can't hurt to give you the link to that post again, now can it?:-) boccibeefs.blogspot.com/2010/12/inn-at-cedar-falls.html

So are you're thinking that we might be a bit biased in our review since we actually appear in this issue of the magazine? Well, we really are biased because we love this magazine, but since we were not compensated in any way for doing this review, we'll just throw caution to the wind and tell you what we honestly think.

We have to admit that we hadn't heard of FIDO Friendly magazine until last April when Parental Unit and I met Carol Bryant, the magazine's editorial and social media director at the first BlogPaws conference, although it's been on newsstands for over a decade. Once we read our first issue, we couldn't imagine why we hadn't been faithful readers all along. The magazine's tag line is: "Leave No Dog Behind" and describes itself as "the travel and lifestyle magazine for you and your dog" that provides "a complete guide to Fido-friendly accommodations across the United States and Canada."

One of the things we noticed right away is the quality of the writing-Parental Unit considers herself a bit of a writing snob, but she was instantly impressed with the writers' skill at navigating the variety of topics covered in each issue-they take the reader form heartbreaking to hilarious with pitch perfect tone and style.
Speaking of great writing, don't forget to check out the magazine's blog, written by Carol Bryant. Let us simply say: this is the way a blog should be written. Check it out here: blog.fidofriendly.com/

Now, let's take a few examples from this issue:
One article titled, "Fixing FIDO" reports on an international group of veterinarians, including Dr. Jeff Weber (Lassie's vet), who are being filmed as part of a documentary of the same name, as they spay and neuter dogs in Peru and other countries where having dogs as "pets" is a foreign idea. Interestingly, this piece is written by the producer of the documentary.

Another article on finding just the right dog for you and your lifestyle, details all the substantive decisions we must make when choosing a new family member, while another piece describes how a shelter dog rescued it's owner from an abusive relationship. There's the lowdown on how one man's vision for a dream dog park "shaped a community", and a woman's poignant journey of "loving and loosing Fido". Especially helpful are the additional resources that are provided with each article-so that if your interested in watching that documentary, you've got the website. If you need help removing yourself from abuse or recovering from loss, the information and contacts are right there.

On the lighter side (and there's always lots of fun), the magazine's issues alternate between photos of Fido's "tails" and "tongues" (You'll see a ton of tails in this issue, and my tongue in the January/February issue, among many others). And each issue includes reviews of the latest pet products, and dispenses  expert advice on training, care, and basically everything a dog owner needs to know.
Of course, a good part of each issue describes the plethora of places to visit and stay with your pooch. As more and more families include their dog in their vacation plans, this information isn't just helpful, it's invaluable.

Take this fabulous destination piece for example:

Here's the link to the online version of the December 2010 issue so you can see for yourself what we mean: http://www.zinio.com/reader.jsp?issue=416143848&o=ext.

Now here's your chance to win a year's subscription to FIDO Friendly magazine! By the way, the winner can choose to receive either a print or online subscription. Just comment on this post sometime between now and Saturday January 15th, at 1:00 pm. EST. You must be an official Follower of this blog to win. If you could take the extra minute and follow us on Twitter and our Facebook Fan page, we'd appreciate it.

As always, we'll randomly choose one winner from among the comments, and we'll announce the results on Saturday afternoon. Good luck one and all!

The Inn At Cedar Falls

We wanted to share a wonderful experience we had earlier this summer visiting an amazing Inn in the Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio, called The Inn at Cedar Falls. Parental Unit has been visiting this Inn for over 20 years to hike in the beautiful Hocking Hills and then dine at the Inn's fabulous restaurant, always longing to stay in one of their rooms, cottages or cabins.

Well, this spring, after meeting the wonderful Editorial and Social Media Director of FIDO Friendly Magazine, Carol Bryant, at the first BlogPaws conference, Parental Unit decided to pitch this breathtaking Inn for a FIDO friendly destination piece for the magazine.
Thanks to the generous Innkeepers, Ellen Grinsfelder and her husband, Terry Lingo, Parental Unit and I were able to stay the night in a pet friendly cottage and interview them for the story. The article appeared in the November/December issue of FIDO Friendly-enjoy it right here!

Yep, you're seeing that right! That's me on one of the Inn's relaxing porches with another canine visitor, Rudi. And Rachel, my personal photographer, was there to snap these pictures. (You can click on the article below to "biggify" and read!)

Here are a few pictures of the Inn taken during our stay on a warm June evening.... remember those? All of these photos were taken by Rachel at www.rachellaurenphotography.com

This is the original 1840's log cabin that houses the restaurant

The building on the left is the gift shop and Inn registration with a wider view of the restaurant cabin.

And here's part of the outdoor dining patio directly behind the bar/restaurant.

Let's peek inside...this is part of the log cabin dining room.

And this is the guest lounge-take a gander at that gorgeous fireplace! Further back is the entry to the conference area, fully equipped for business meetings and other gatherings.

Speaking of a fireplace, we want to make sure that you all know that the Hocking Hills region and this beautiful Inn is a wonderful respite throughout the winter season-talk about cozy and relaxing! And the Inn offers reduced rates and all kinds of fun packages for its guests during this "off" season.
Check out their website here for all the details: www.theinnatcedarfalls.com.

We'll leave you with a few thoughts from the Innkeepers:

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is proud to be a dog friendly facility in the beautiful Hocking Hills of southeastern Ohio.  We offer two quaint cottages and one 1840s log cabin for our furry friends to visit.  Many guests enjoy traveling with their "best friend".  We even have a special "treat" for them upon arrival.
We make every effort to listen to our guests and accommodate their needs.  That's mainly why we decided to become dog friendly.  In addition, innkeepers Terry and Ellen loved traveling with their golden retriever.
With breakfast included with your stay, the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls also provides a fine dining experience in the Hocking Hills offering lunch and dinner featuring a large seasonal outdoor dining area.
Restore your balance as you experience the deep relaxation of our luxurious spa treatments at the Spa at Cedar Falls. A quiet retreat awaits those seeking the luxury of spa services gently balanced with closeness to nature.
Being in the heart of Hocking Hills, the Inn is an ideal setting for business meetings, girls’ getaways, weddings, church groups, and special interests groups like car clubs and photographers.

A Round Up Of "Leaf Peeping" Destinations From FIDO Friendly Magazine!!

Parental Unit and I are proud to welcome FIDO Friendly Magazine back to our blog! This time, Carol Byant, Editorial and Social Media Director for FIDO Friendly, has given us the magazine's round-up of fall foilage trips to take with your pooch. If it's a wee bit late in your neck of the woods to hit the peak colors, you can always clip and save this valuable information for next year.

Without further yakking from us...heeeeere's Carol!

FIDO Friendly magazine’s Top 10 Leaf Peeping Destinations for Dog Lovers
By Carol Bryant, FIDO Friendly magazine
Imagine you and your pooch crunching through autumn’s quilt that blankets our nation’s trees this fall. Not sure if you’re a leaf peeper? Do you love the gorgeous fall foliage and rich hues turning green leaves to goldens, oranges and reds? Then grab the camera, pack some apple cider and a few Fido biscuits and head for less-than-greener pastures, as FIDO Friendly presents the Top 10 Leaf-Peeping destinations.
Washington County, Maine: This area is generally the first place the sun rises each morning on U.S. soil. Washington County is comprised of 85 percent woodlands, eight percent lakes and four percent bogs, so one can imagine the bountiful beauty gracing the landscape in the autumn months. Take home a bushel of blueberries to mark your tracks.
Acadia National Park in Mount Desert, Maine: Considered to be one of the best views in the state of Maine, the top of Cadillac Mountain at 1,532 feet is the highest point along the north Atlantic seaboard. The “peak” season is generally considered to be mid-October but this varies. Certain lakes and trails prohibit Fido but the majority of Acadia welcomes the canine variety.
Lake Champlain, Vermont: Instead of walking or riding through fall foliage, the waters of the lake invite a boat ride amidst historic lighthouses and forests of fall foliage. The Fido-friendly resort of Basin Harbor Club and Resort is located right on the lake. While in Vermont, check out Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. Situated on this glorious land is 400 acres of nature, leaves and the famous Dog Chapel
Catskill Mountains, New York: Located in New York’s Hudson Valley and within 100 miles north of the city, nestled away is this beautiful mountainous region harboring vibrancy and golds galore. Harvest festivals, farmers markets, orchard picking and craft fairs line the charming towns that surround the Catskills. Often called “America’s First Wilderness,” there’s enough here to do to make a complete week’s vacation out of it.
Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania: Known to many as the “honeymoon capital of the world,” Pennsylvania is home to 127 tree varieties, so early fall reveals a glorious blanket of ambers, purples, oranges and more. Pack a picnic and take Fido to the Delaware River area where eagles soar, a rural countryside graces the landscape and sightseeing is at its most spectacular finest.
Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina: Spanning 469 miles and connecting the Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks, this scenic drive is riddled with nature areas, trails and plenty of overlooks to pit-stop and take in nature’s beauty. Explore your inner hiker and take Fido to Grandfather Mountain along the parkway in Linville, North Carolina.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas: Yee haw meets dog paw and Fido’s ready to hit the fall trail. Nature’s spectacle displays her glory at McKittrick Canyon, one of the most prized locations in the entire state. Enchanting in this region are the leaves plus the cacti. Rock enthusiasts rejoice at Permian Reef. Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in all of Texas at 8,749 feet.
Aspen, Colorado: Though images of ski slopes and powder hounds, Aspen is not only king of snow. Rich yellow-gold leaves glisten on the aspen trees at their peak every fall. Behold the quaking aspen tree of North America while visiting Denver. Backpack through San Isabel National Forest where over a million acres of mountains are sure to take both yours and Fido’s breath away.
Great River Road, Wisconsin: Located in the western region of the state, this area winds 250 miles along the shores of the Mississippi river. Quaint towns pepper themselves along the route for plenty of sightseeing, leaf peeping and Fido pit stops. Steamboats including the Delta Queen may pass by, as visitors are welcome to 50 local parks and beaches.
Shenandoah Valley, Washington DC:  Spend some time exploring Washington DC with Fido (including hiking Arlington National Cemetery together) and then head over to the nearby Virginian Shenandoah Valley. Located 90 miles west of the Capital Beltway, Shenandoah National Park features over 500 miles of trails and close to 200,000 acres of land. Take the scenic route and let Fido sniff the grounds along Skyline Drive. This 100+ mile road meanders throughout the length of Shenandoah National Park.

Fido Friendly's Blog - Check It Out!

I bet you all remember earlier this summer when the publisher of Fido Friendly Magazine, Susan Sims, did a guest post on my blog along with a give-a-way of a year's subscription to Fido Friendly. As you recall, our friend, Mango the Maltese Kiddo won that generous prize! See that guest post about Fido Friendly's cross country adoption program right here:
boccibeefs.blogspot.com/2010/06/fido-friendly-magazine-we-love-ya.html#comments.

But I don't think I introduced you to Carol Bryant, Fido Friendly's Editorial and Social Media Director.
Parental Unit and I originally met Carol at the first BlogPaws conference here in Columbus, and then Parental Unit chatted with her again at the recent BlogPaws West conference in Denver.

Here's a picture of Carol and her adorable Cocker Spaniel, Dexter, at the Denver conference. Now, according to Parental Unit, Dexter is the fastest tail wagger on record-if you stand too close to him, you'll get blown right down the street!

Carol is an all around fabulous writer (she's the author of many published short stories), and in addition to her other duties at the magazine, she's the writer of Fido Friendly's Blog. Carol's talent makes this blog a special treat for the dog lover-it's always packed with useful information and interesting anecdotes, and you know, it's just downright funny!

Her latest post is about dogs and high fashion called, "Bark is the New Black". Read it right here:
blog.fidofriendly.com/hot-topic/bark-is-the-new-black-go-back-to-school-for-fido-fashion/

While you're at it, put Fido Friendly's blog on your blogroll, so you don't miss a single post! But don't switch from this channel too often, because Carol's planning to do a guest post on this very blog, so stay tuned.
