Vet Approved Ways To Cut Down On Pet Care Expenses

Yes, we cost a good amount of money to keep healthy and happy!

As you all know, one of our favorite veterinarians is Dr. Karen Becker from Mercola Healthy Pets, and we've brought you much sound advice from her over the last few years. One of the reasons we like her is the level of detail she provides in her articles—they're way more than tips!

In this recent article, Dr Becker discusses several ways you can cut back on pet expenses (and a few areas where you should splurge!) and still ensure your beloved pets are both healthy and happy. According to this article, humans in the United States are expected to spend about $62.75 billion on pet care in 2016, 4% more than the 60.3 billion spent in 2015. In fact, records kept by the American Pet Products Association show that pet care spending has steadily increased each year since they began collecting this data in 1994.

Areas to splurge are on high quality food and routine preventative veterinary care, including oral health. And you can save money by learning to do most, if not all, of grooming chores yourself, including baths. By the way, Parental Unit does all of my grooming herself...and as you can see, I was just meant to be a scruffy dog!

Let us know what you do to slash your pet care bills—we'd love to hear your cost-cutting strategies.

Pets Add Life (PAL's) 6th Annual Children's Poetry Contest—PrizesGalore!

Our good friends at Pets Add Life have exteneded their deadline for youngins' in grades 3-8 to enter their 6th annual Children's Poetry ContestSavvy young writers have until February 28, 2014 at 5:00 pm EST to enter original poems about their pets that can include what they love about them and the joys they bring. It's the perfect opportunity for the younger generation to help spread the joys and benefits of pet ownership, and at the same time, allow kids to tap into their creativity for a chance to win some spectacular prizes. It's a win-win-win opportunity because the more people realize the joy pet ownership brings, the more likely they will be to adopt at least one (or multiple!) pets.

Six contestants nationwide (one for each grade 3-8) will win a $250 gift certificate for pet products and a "by-line" in a nationally circulated print or online publication. But wait, there's more! Each winner's class will receive a $1000 scholarship to spend on pet-related education. And we sure do need more of that!

As you probably know, PAL is a non-profit founded by the American Pet Products Association  to help demonstrate the joys and benefits of responsible pet ownership and to encourage animal adoption. So please spread the good word about this contest to all of your young human friends...and their teachers, too!

Pets Add Life: Video Outtakes

As you ease into your weekend, we thought we'd share these outtakes from our all time favorite pet videos. Pets Add Life (PAL) has done such a wonderful job encouraging people to adopt multiple pets with their classic "Dog Wants a Kitty" and other videos and advertising campaigns. We're not quite sure what makes us nearly cry with laughter at every video and outtake-maybe it's the dogs talking or that sweet voice over... And we have to give a thank-you and shout-out to their creator, Andrew Grantham-check out his Facebook page and new, Talking Pets YouTube channel!

PAL is produced by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and is a non-profit PSA campaign "designed to demonstrate the joys and benefits of responsible pet ownership" and to encourage adoptions of all types of pets. We agree, we love it, and we hope you enjoy!

If you think these videos are funny, let us know why-we'd love to hear from you!
