Helping Shelter Pets...And Black And White Sunday.

Parental Unit's first picture of yours truly after arriving in my forever home.

We're picking up on the great and powerful Oz the Terrier's idea for today: discussing the many ways you can help shelter pets. Of course, adopting or fostering a dog or kitty is wonderful if you can swing it, but many of us can't add another family member—at least not at the moment.

You know we love to promote the "Adopt Don't Shop" mantra, including the myriad ways shelters and the beautiful orphaned animals they care for, can benefit by your generosity. There's always one thing shelters and their fundraising arms need and that's cold hard cash—so consider a tax deductible donation of any amount. Your time is valuable, too, so why not volunteer to walk and or play with the dogs? We're sure you will be the best part of their day, just like you are for your own pets.

Just yesterday, Parental Unit went to our local shelter and donated a huge bag of items, including food, treats and lots of unused or slightly used toys. The volunteer fundraising arm of our county shelter is called "Friends of the Shelter" and they operate a small store right off the shelter lounge area where they sell everything your newly adopted dog could want to begin his or her second chance in grand style.

Of course, since we're bloggers and most of us are active on social media, we can very easily share the adoptables pictures along with an enticing description. In fact, if you've recently visited your shelter, you might include a personal description of the  dogs you visited with or walked in your social media share. This might help potential adopters get a better feel of what a particular pooch is like.

Let us know what you've been doing to help shelters and those animals they serve—we'd love to hear your ideas and stories!

And a hearty thank-you to Sugar the Golden Retriever and Dachshund Nola for hosting Black and White Sunday! Join up below and see what are blogging friends are up to—along with their gorgeous black and white photos.

Thank you for the reminder. I have some things I can donate to a local shelter. But I can't let myself look at the adoptables or we'll end up with another dog in the family (which we've decided is not a good idea for our sensitive Shyla).

Great job by you and the Parental Unit, Bocci! We know the shelter was so appreciative of your donation!

Those are all good suggestions. We donated old towels and bathmats when we cleaned out the linen closet once and it seemed they were glad to have them.

Yes, it is a great idea, Cathy— "one stop shop" so to speak!

We wanted to mention...that Parental Unit strolled through the shelter in every area for adoptable dogs that was open that day, and all but three dogs were pit bull or pit mixes. We'd love to try and understand the "why" behind this pit bull overpopulation. Please share your thoughts!
