The Pig As Pet: Enter Señor Bacon

Exhibit A: A pet potbelly pig. Photo courtesy of Randy Harris/ The New York Times

We don't usually write about companion animals other than dogs or cats, but this article on The New York Times Menagerie Blog is too charming to pass up, and certainly charming enough to pass on to our readers. What started during courtship as a step towards commitment (Maybe we should get a cute little potbelly pig, dear.), ended in a post-nuptial purchase that now happily roots around one couple's couch and bed.

Apparently Señor Bacon, as they aptly named the little fella, has peaked at only 30 pounds, but that's just one on the issues potential pig parents have to consider. As with all pet parenting—the decision to adopt or purchase is for the life of the animal. While Senor Bacon seems to have found a loving permanent home, not all potbelly pigs have been so lucky. Enjoy the read, and let us know if you or any of your friends have parented a pig. We'd love to know!
