"Living With Your Pet" Tips: De-Skunking Your Dog!

Nope, no skunks here...

Parental Unit admits that none of her dogs (including me) have ever even encountered a skunk, let alone been sprayed. And she considers herself very lucky, because she swears she'd have a nervous breakdown from that smell. But...just in case any of you are on the losing end of an encounter with a striped-tailed varmint, here are some strategies from our friends at DogTime Media, to remove the skunk odor from your pooch and make him or her huggable again.

If your pooch has been sprayed directly in the face, gently flush out his eyes with a soothing, over-the counter eye-wash (you country folks should keep that on hand, I guess), then, before or after shampooing, soak your dog for at least several minutes in the following solution: 1/4 C baking soda, 1tsp. liquid soap and 1 quart hydrogen peroxide. Big Note: never store this solution—it will eventually blow up!

Other Parental Units swear by tomato juice, apple cider or vinegar to remove the skunk stench. And you'll likely have to repeat the shampooing several times...but unfortunately, the odor might take up to six weeks to fully dissipate. Ugh!

Let us know how you've dealt with a "skunked" dog—we'd love to hear about it. Paws crossed that you never have to use these tips!
