Partners For Healthy Pets: We're On Board!

Our friends at Partners for Healthy Pets are on a mission!

Partners for Healthy Pets is a committee of the non-profit American Veterinary Medical Foundation, whose mission is to promote the well-being of America's pets by stressing the importance of regular veterinary care. Their message: Annual checkups are as essential as food and love. And what's not to love about that? t

Unfortunately, in the last decade or so, some humans have not been as diligent in making sure that their pets receive regular veterinary care, and the statistics are startling: Since 2001, dog vet visits have dropped 21% and cat vet visits have dropped 30%. Curiously, during this same time period, there has been a dramatic increase in preventable diseases in our pets, like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Now, we realize that sometimes money is tight or is prioritized elsewhere, but our opinion is there's no skimping on preventative care for your pets. They can't tell you when they're sick or in pain, and you, loving pet owner, are not trained to detect the symptoms of disease or discomfort like a veterinarian. And to be frank, routine medical checkups come with the territory—if you have a cat or dog, you have a trusted veterinarian, whom you visit at least once a year.

Parental Unit grew up in a blue collar steel town—not a particularly sophisticated setting, but even way back in the '60's, she and her family had a beloved veterinarian for her cats and miniature schnauzer, Benjie. And the good doctor was a women, no less: Ruth E. Esser, DVM, and  Parental Unit recalls her fondly.

Please help us spread the good word— that annual checkups are as essential as food and love! If you have a friend or acquantence that admits to little to no veterinary care for their pets, give them a gentle nudge in the direction of the Partners for Healthy Pets Website to check out their cool, interactive displays that will help them and you learn more about pet health and the benefits of preventative care.

Very important. It's hard to believe that people don't care about their pets.
