Tax Deductions For Pet Owners: Yes You Can! (Sometimes)

Do I look like a tax deduction to you?

Can at least some pet owners get tax beaks for their furry family members? The answer is a very qualified "yes", at least according to this article on MSN Money. Service dogs and others with special training, for example, are tax exempt per IRS regulations, as are bonafide guard dogs. But note: it's the guard dog's services, not the dog himself who's deductible. And here's an ironic possible deduction: Because pets are still (unfortunately) considered property, if you move your household and your moving expenses are otherwise deductible, expenses incurred in moving your pet are also likely deductible, right along with the furniture.

We weren't aware that there had been a bill introduced in Congress back in 2009 (H.R. 3501), that would have allowed pet owners to deduct up to $3,500 annually for "certified pet costs". This bill had the backing of most animal organizations, strong public support and quite a bit of momentum...until it died in a House Committee.

Parental Unit is all for "using" Bella and me and our considerable expenses as a tax deduction, if and when it becomes legal—how about you?

The costs for service dogs and working dogs can be used for tax deductions over here too. Have a serene Sunday and get on some big easy today.
Best wishes Molly
