F.D.A. Will Regulate Production Of Pet Food & Farm Animal Feed For First Time!

                              Did someone say "food"?

Hot off the presses! This article about the Food and Drug Administration's newly proposed rules governing pet food production and farm animal feed was just posted a few hours ago on The New York Times website. We're thrilled to finally see some regulation of not only pet food, but what is fed to the animals that humans eat.

The F.D.A. says that the proposed new rules (currently in their 120 day public comment period), will "help prevent food-borne illnesses in both animals and people." These new rules are promulgated under the Food Safety and Modernization Act, passed in 2010 which was, believe it or not, "...the first major overhaul of of the F.D.A.'s food safety laws since the 1930's." And these rules come a full six years after "the biggest pet food recall in history, when a Chinese producer contaminated dog and cat food with melamine, a compound used in plastic" that caused the deaths of hundreds of pets across the U.S.

Parental Unit and I both are a fan of well-planned and executed government regulations (it comes, in part, from Parental Unit's 15 years helping to enforce federal and state environmental regulations), and we realize the heft and gravitas (not to mention legal requirements!) that federal oversight-with teeth-brings. So, we are thrilled that these new regulations have been proposed and look forward to seeing how their implementation helps both humans and pets.

What do you think? We'd love to know!

I agree - it's about time. Dog food should not kill dogs, or make them deathly ill. We experienced it first-hand so we are all for regulation!
