She's called "the guard dog's guardian", making daily visits to make sure that dogs who work to guard junk yards, mechanic shops and other sundry places of business at least get some food, fresh water and a bit of lovin'. Ms. Massaro, profiled in this recent New York Times article, started the Spay Neuter Intervention Project (SNIP) and for over 20 years, she's a regular (and not always welcome) visitor to some of the roughest neighborhoods in New York City, tending to others' "working" dogs and cats - animals on guard duty that are chained or penned and often underfed and under loved, including cats kept by deli owners for rodent control. She calls their conditions "modern day slavery", and claims that their plight is nearly forgotten by the larger animal rescue groups because they live in the poorest neighborhoods.
Whatever the reasons these dogs and cats haven't been helped and their owners haven't been prosecuted, we applaud Ms. Massaro's tireless and unpaid efforts.
