Mummified Mexican Dog A Rare Find

Photo of a 1000 year old Mexican dog, courtesy of the LA Times

The above canine specimen, believed to be nearly 1000 years old, was originally excavated from an ancient burial site in La Laguna, Mexico almost 60 years ago. Unfortunately, in remained hidden and forgotten in a school museum in north-central Mexico until this August, when archaeologists from the National Institute of  Anthropology and History determined that the preserved pup was worthy of further study. This recent article in the LA Times says that its expression "is serene and somehow friendly." And this old dog will "live" to see another day: He will likely be put on display at the Regional Museum of La Laguna in 2013. Check out the slide show that accompanies the article to see several close-ups of his sweet face.

We agree with both of you-a bit "icky" and a bit of an exageration on the serene, friendly expression. Although if you look at the close-up pics of the dog's face, it does look quite sweet;-)

And it turns out that if these dog remains are studied more closely, as they plan to do, it should enlghten archaeologists about Mexican civilization... Another way dogs are helping humans!

A Dog Feeder is an amazing invention that lets you Feed your dog the food he or she really needs, instead of the food that you think your dog might need. With a Dog Feeder, you can program the Feeder to give your dog the food that he or she needs to maintain a healthy weight and avoid specific health problems.
