The Magic Of Christmas...And Six-Toed Cats

We still believe (no matter how old Parental Unit gets) in the magic of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, particularly in the way it inspires us to be generous, empathetic and loving. And after several years of highlighting this simple Hallmark commercial, we never get tired of watching it, and hope you  enjoy it even more each year, like we do.

For those of you who don't "dream of a White Christmas" but dream instead of a sunny beach getaway this time of year, this story is for you. Which brings us (sort of) to the tale of the six toed cats, the 40-some cats that live at Earnest Hemingway's former home/now museum in Key West, Florida.

According to this article in The New York Times, there's a bit of a controversy about these purring polydactyls. It seems that federal regulators say these cats are a living, breathing exhibit (like a zoo) and require a federal license, causing all sorts of other complications. But these "Hemingway Cats" are no worse for the controversy: they lounge in the abundant sunshine, are well fed and get weekly veterinary visits, and the constant stream of visitors seem to take as much "delight in the cats as they did in Hemingway lore. As one visitor, who returns annually, said "Hemingway gets you here the first time,...but the cats keep us coming back." Enjoy the slide show of the Hemingway House and the six toed kitties that accompany this article.
