The Runt Of The Litter Often Wins Big

Notice the larger head and gigantic eyes of this pup? Humans find that extra cute!

If you've ever wondered why so many people say that when choosing from a litter of puppies, they pick the "runt"? Well, this article in today's Washington Post explains the science behind that choice. According to a veterinarian at the University of California, Davis, "Humans are drawn to animals or beings of any kind whose proportion of eyes to head is large."And the smallest pups of a litter are no exception. For the most part, smaller shelter dogs are adopted much faster than larger dogs, too. And humans tend to root for the "underdog" so to speak, and of course, the runt of a litter that survives is regarded as a fighter-an animal who deserves to win-and then to be taken home...and hugged for the rest of its life.

And speaking of a cute runt, check out this piglet cuddling between Rottweiler pups...

Have you ever picked the runt of a litter? Let us know and tell us why!
