Tips to keep Your Pets Safe On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Dog courtesy of the ASPCA's website.
We have to be honest: As careful as Parental Unit is with both her food and mine, she didn't realize that some of the typical Thanksgiving fare listed in both Dog Fancy's holiday safety tips compiled by veterinarians, and the ASPCA's pet safety recommendations could be hazardous to your dog, cat or both. For example, we knew about chocolate, raisins and grapes, but NOT about sage, bread dough or macadamia nuts. And NO turkey bones! They're no different than chicken bones: soft, hollow and splinter easily, potentially causing damage to your pet's digestive tract.

But the good news is that plain cooked turkey and even small amounts of unadorned potatoes and vegetables should be just fine-whew!

You know, we appreciate having these tips congregated in one or two places to make our lives easier (and safer), and we think many of them are just common sense. But our lives are so busy these days, especially around the holidays, that we can easily take leave of our senses and say, leave a trash bag on the floor unattended-did you know that most dogs who visit the emergency room during the holidays have gotten into the trash? So it's good to be reminded of these potential pet hazards lurking in the holiday festivities and take heed.

Why not take a quick glance at these two short articles to refresh your memory and keep your pets safe and healthy over this long holiday weekend. We hope you all have a splendid time!
