Divorce Battles Now Include Pet Custody Issues

Although state laws consider pets no differently than any other kind of property-like say, a couch or an end table, pet parents are increasingly including pet custody and visitation rights in their divorce decrees. And for some, like the couple profiled for this Sunday Morning News segment, a joint custody arrangement seems to work for all parties involved. No word on whether their beloved dog Baldwin gets his own bedroom at both parents' homes...

We'd love to know what you think-should pet custody be a part of divorce settlements? Would you fight in court for the right to have custody or visitation rights for your pet?

I would definitely fight for custody of my pets. Of course, ideally two people could work it out on their own peacefully.

Hi Y'all,

Pets have long been considered in divorces. It is just with the modern communication that it is more widely known and formally arranged. Unfortunately too often the pets aren't considered and end up...homeless or abandoned.

Y'all come by now,

Actually I experienced this but I am lucky that it was amicable.

When I had my Angel Bobo my ex-husband and I had found him together. (we weren't married at the time we found him). I was the one who took Bobo to the vet for his first visits (paid the bills for him etc), once we married I had told my ex if we were ever to part (I must have had a sixth sense) that Bobo was MINE!

We did end up divorcing, I did feel bad because my husband adored Bobo as well but Bobo and I for many years had lived alone together, he was incredibly attached to me. When we divorced, Bobo was mine.

YES I would fight in court for custody of my pets but thankfully I didn't have to!

If this were the case, mom would definitely do what was best fur me, that is keep me! The sad part is so many pets wind up in shelters after a breakup. Terrific topic Bocci!
