Jimmy Stewart: The Actor And His Dogs

Parental Unit and I watched a movie last night that we'd been longing to see for years: the 1959 classic, Anatomy of A Murder  (O.K. it was just Parental Unit who'd always wanted to see it, but I was right beside her on the couch!).
It was touted with this quote from a Los Angeles Times review: "One of the most extraordinary films ever made" and was brimming with old-time movie stars like Jimmy Stewart,  the glamorous Lee Remick, and a young Ben Gazzara and George C. Scott. And let's not forget that it has a gorgeous score by Duke Ellington and was directed by Otto Preminger. The story-line was serious and riveting (a murder trial), but the film had many flashes of humor and warmth, not the least of which was the little spunky dog (we think a cairn terrier) that accompanied Remick's character in nearly every scene, and who was even introduced as evidence during the trial. I think that pooch, who carried a flashlight and walked ahead of Remick's sultry Ms. Manion so she could see while walking in the dark, was what you'd call a "scene stealer".

And speaking of the late, great actor, Jimmy Stewart, we just happened to recently see a favorite clip from the old Tonight Show, when it was hosted (for 30 years) by Parental Unit's favorite comedian, Johnny Carson. Does anyone remember when an elderly Jimmy Stewart read the poem about his dear departed dog, Beau, and the whole audience and Carson choked up? If you're longing to see that tearful segment again, or have never seen it (or are saying to yourself: Johnny who? Jimmy Stewart, hmmmm...is that Martha Stewart's dad?), then do indulge right now-and enjoy.

P.S. Speaking of Martha Stewart, we will be posting her pet toy review and giveaway no later than the beginning of next week. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Heehee. Who is Jimmy Stewart? HAHAHAHAHA! He graduated from Mom's high school (about a 1000 years before Mom did, which was, oh, about 500 years ago...) and has been a family icon. I mean, where would we be without 'It's a Wonderful Life'?!? And Mom says she actually can't watch the clip - she's seen it before - and she's not up for having the sads this morning.

Oh how neat! Thanks for letting us know this! Can we agree that Jimmy Stewart was and remains a "national treasure"? We figure that if you don't cry during or after watching him read that poem, you must be made of stone!

I adore Jimmy Stewart. I worked at a library during my college years where Mr Stewart donated his many posters, thoughts and work that he did. I was able to go thru the many things he donated and got goosebumps knowing that he once owned these. Mr. Stewart is a gem of a human being, setting an example for so many of us of what a great human being can be. I've seen the Beau show before, I own it coz Johnny is one of my favorie comedians. It is a heart breaker. Thanks for the article.
