The Importance Of Pet ID Tags: Is Your Pet Wearing One?

We ran across this recent blog post in the New York Times health and wellness section about the importance of our companion animals wearing a collar and ID tag. In these days of microchips, we tend to forget this simple, low-tech way of keeping our pets safe.

Photo of Willow courtesy of the New York Times.
Take the case of Willow, that intrepid wandering cat who was recently found in Manhattan, five years after being accidentally let out by a Colorado family's handyman. Willow had a microchip, and that's how she was eventually relocated with her family, but had she also been wearing a collar with ID tag, she might have been returned home much sooner - or so says Dr. Emily Weiss, vice president of shelter research and development for the ASPCA, who's conducted research on whether the use of pet tags can be increased.

In this photo, you can see that I'm wearing my collar and tags, but neither of those tags include Parental Unit's name and phone number, which would make it easier for any kind soul trying to locate my home. (I broke through the fence just yesterday chasing a squirrel, but didn't get too far...)

I'm also micro chipped, courtesy of the shelter where I was adopted, but we agree with this article- I as well as Bella need both a chip and separate ID tag.

We'd love to hear what you think: Are your pets micro chipped? (there are health concerns that might be associated with this method, but most shelter dogs don't have a choice). Do they always wear a collar with readable ID tag? Are you running to the store right now to have one engraved?

Stay tuned tomorrow for Rin-Tin-Tin, Part II, and later this week for a splendid toy(s) giveaway. Hint: The toys are from a new line of pet products from America's favorite domestic goddess.

We HAVE tags with our name and number, but to be honest, we only wear them when we are outside the house. The tag jingling drives the Mama half insane. You are absolutely right though. The Mama should get us tags that lays flat against the colar - or get us custom embroidered collars. Thanks for the reminder Bocci!

I'm all about the ID tags. I found some stylish ones on Etsy for Parker and Skye's dressy collars and have cheap tags for their other collars. Foster pup has a microchip and ID tag, but my dogs aren't chipped yet.

We are all microchipped, but before that, we all had ID tags and we have kept wearing them. I even have a temporary tag for when I travel with Mom's cell number on it and the fact that I'm away from home!
