Dogs Being "Bad" Or Just Dogs?

An article in the "Thursday Styles" section of today's New York Times, discusses the shocking lack of civility among dogs of the wealthy. We're not so sure how "shocking" it is, but according to this article titled "Civility on the Way Out? Add Dogs toThat List", "High-end hounds and pampered canines seem to be acting out everywhere these days, in doorman buildings, the gated homes of Los Angeles or on manicured Hamptons lawns. And like their tightly wound owners, they can be lightening rods for lawsuits and bad publicity."

The article is worth reading if only for the many hilarious and even shocking examples of uncivil canine behavior, but we also think it's quite sad. As the article says, so many dogs are expected to act like little well-behaved people, when if fact, they're animals with instinctual needs that must be met by their owners-like vigorous daily exercise, for one. We get the feeling that these "pampered" pooches aren't really pampered at all, but simply adornments for their owners. What do you think?

Here I am, the perfect civil canine specimen, eagerly awaiting my "Master's" next command.
(Yeah, right!)

On a feline note, stay tuned for tomorrow's very exciting post! Did you know that tomorrow, April 29th, in addition to being the day of the royal wedding, is also "National Hairball Awareness Day"? We'll have lots of information for you on the fascinating subject of hairballs from our friends at FURminator products, along with fun photos of the "hairy creatures" all of us who participated in this project created from our cats' excess fur. Nonstop fun, we tell ya!

Bocci! We're gonna keep our eyes open for ya at all the post wedding receptions. You'd certainly bring a bunch of good reminders of proper etiquette to the group ... which might be a really good thing. And, what a better place to do some of your own research on the behavior of dogs of the posh and wealthy? Just don't watch any of us. Okay? Or at least don't include us in any of your data. It could be incriminating.

Havin' fun,
Jake and Fergi

Bocci, you rock! I have three dogs, and while one is very civilized, the other two aren't so much. They also don't think it's fair that they're expected to obey our commands while the cats just get to do whatever they want.

I read the article. While there were a few items that I'd consider "issues" it seemed to me that many of the folks involved would have been better off with a stuffed animal. Dogs need to be dogs sometimes, including barking, running and peeing on things. Thank dog the Doodle has his own yard where he can be his nutty self to our heart's content.

We like Vicky's recommendation-why don't at least some of these folks substitute stuffed animal toys for the real thing?!
