Animal Hoarding Follow-Up- A Shelter Vet's Perspective

We just recently learned of a veterinarian, Michael Moyer, VMD, who is the Rosenthal Director of Shelter Animal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and the owner of Bridgewater Veterinary Hospital, Inc. in Bensalem, PA. He's also the current Vice-President and board member of the American Animal Hospital Association. He maintains a blog associated with the Bridgewater Animal Hospital and we thought you'd enjoy reading his most recent post that discusses the intersection between shelter vets and animal hoarding. This post also happens to touch on the issues that we mentioned in our recent post on animal hoarding, and our discussions in the follow-up comments.
Here's the link to Dr. Moyer's blog and the post titled "Animal Hoarding: Too Much of a Good Thing:
bensalemvet.com/wordpress/

Hope you enjoy his perspective as much as we did. We have more interesting topics involving the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Moyer coming soon!

It's me again. I just read the article and I suppose I am one of the people who is judging. I can see some of his points and I do know that many hoarders do the same thing over and over again without help. I guess I still have a difficult time justifying letting them have any animals. Would we permit a child molester to live near a school because he finds comfort in children or an alcoholic who has killed people drunk driving to have another drink and get behind the wheel. No, we wouldn't.

I am a pretty open-minded and accepting person in most ways, but I guess I do draw the line with animal abusers and child abusers - and in my book, hoarders are some of the worst abusers around.

I will be short because its too early for me to get on my soap box and get all riled up :)

Ive seen a hoarding situation first hand as a volunteer with a rescue. I was pissed one second and then sad the second. Im torn but then im not when I stop and think about it. meeting and talking to a hoarder and watching them get so upset when animal control is there is sad, I can see a tiny glimmer of why they had so many animals and then I snap back into reality and see the poor suffering animals and the horrible conditions. Its an illness and it has to be stopped. I as a human have a tiny tiny part of me that feels sorry for these people but honestly I feel worse for the animals. i was on scened at one hoarding rescue mission and I have never been out in the field again after viewing it first hand.

Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to write these powerful comments. We agree with what both of you..and what the others have said-and we ain't just sayin' that to be friendly:-)

We have an (almost) first hand story, too, that we may one day share on our blog when we feel the time is right...

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

That was interesting. I think that’s really good idea. Thanks for interesting information, this is so cool! It’s amazing how we have come far enough in society to see the real meaning of this animal. I like your work.

According to the UNDP's National Human Development Report, with a focus on youth, written by Adil Najam and Faisal Bari, at the current rate of enrolment in schools every child could go to school by 2076. They estimate that the current rate of enrollment would have to be quadrupled if every child were to go to school by the year 2030. For that to happen, Pakistan would have to raise its expenditure on education from 2.2 percent of GDP to 6 percent.
