CNN's Piece on Animal Cognition & Interview With Cesar Millan

Since Parental Unit is really "into" embedding videos these days, we thought we'd share with you the piece that aired a few nights ago on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360. First this segment showed Randi Kaye's interview and demonstration with an animal cognition researcher at Duke University.
See that here.

Then John Roberts, who was substituting for Anderson Cooper (Parental Unit insists on adding here that there is NO SUBSTITUTE for Anderson Cooper) interviews our friend The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan. It's a really interesting to hear Millan answer Roberts' line of questions, that unfortunately, were really not directed to the work that Millan does. But Millan graciously reframed each of the questions so that he could answer them in the context of his work.

The other thing that's unfortunate about this clip is that it cut off the last, offbase comment that Robert's made as they were cutting away from the interview: that he really should have "Millan train his dog." Parental Unit cannot resist intruding with her two cents: she thinks Roberts needed to do his homework before he interviewed The Dog Whisperer...:-)

See that interview here too-and tell us what you think!

Hi, Bocci!
I don't know why but my mom agrees with Parental Unit about Anderson Cooper!
I watched the first video some days ago. My friend Niamh appears there!
Happy saturday!

That is a good video. Interesting ideas. Dogs are very smart and figure things out pretty easily. I raised a puppy that was supposed to go be a blind person's guide and it is amazing what they can do. They understand a whole lot more than we give them credit for.
Take care and have a great day.

One additional thought about the black and clear tubes. The 2nd dog approached the task from a nose-eyes-ear perspective, which is why he is following his nose to the treat and gets it right away - that is the normal way dogs opperate. The first dog seems to approach the task from a eyes first approach, which would be typical for a sight hound but atypical for most other breeds (including him). If he were to get challenged to use his nose more in his daily routine (i.e. sniffing for treat in the yard and house) he would most likely return to the normal nose-eyes-ear approach to things and manage that task faster as well.

I agree, Roberts asked some pretty odd questions there. I don't think he even looked at who he was interviewing until Millan was on the screen in front of him. My feelings toward the "Dog Whisperer" aside, I think he answered these questions pretty well.

That first video was a lot more interesting, though. I like CalmLeader's sum up of the tube exercise. It makes a lot of sense.
