A Few Facts About Puppy Mills

Parental Unit  asked me to pass on this article posted by DogTime media about puppy mills. The article includes some helpful ways to tell whether we're buying a new pup from one of those ghastly "factories", or from a reputable breeder.
Even though we thought we really knew the "low-down" on puppy mills, Parental Unit and I both learned a lot from this article.
It's provided for your reading pleasure right here: dogtime.com/internet-puppy-mills.html

Bravo for sharing this one!

It only the 'consumers' would put an end to purchasing this 'product' we might finally be able to close these mills -

Thanks for posting the link!

We were just discussing at class last night how people need to be more informed before buying dogs. The first day as a vet tech, this family brought in their new puppy who had a horrible case of worms and other illnesses. The dad of the family said, "I can't believe it's sick - I just spent $3600 on it."

Thirty six hundred dollars?!? On a mixed breed puppy that you could find at any rescue or shelter?! Come on!!

If people want "purebred" dogs, which aren't even the only pups at pet stores now, going to a breeder would be a fraction of the cost, plus you get health clearances and some guarantees.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant - but I get really annoyed/angry at people for buying puppies online or at pet stores!

Here we don't have many reputable dog breeders.

How appropriate that you should post this today when it was announced that one of HSUS' "Dirty Dozen" puppy mills of Missouri is closing. Sadly, they plan to auction off their 800 dogs and many of them will end up at other puppy mills. Rescue groups are trying to gather money so they can go down and rescue as many as they can. I hope they rescue a lot.

Here's the story: http://exm.nr/btOlVt

Just as an additional note. There is a new website that allows people to rate breeders and expose the bad ones. It was created to expose backyard breeders and puppy mills. www.thebreederratings.com

Thanks for sharing this info.

I agree with Khyra And Sometimes Her Mom that if people stop going to them, the factories will close.

Education is needed too!!!

Having rescued a puppy mill dog who lit up my life for nearly 15 years, I can attest personally to the horrors of puppy mills. Great post!
