The Impact of Social Media...And A Dancing Dog?

I was cleaning off my desk this morning, when I ran across this article from The New York Times that I'd saved from earlier in September, titled "Online Giving Meets Social Networking".  Read the full article here: www.nytimes.com/2010/09/05/business/05proto.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=Online+Giving+meets+social+Networking&st=nyt

This article talks about the social networking website started by the actor Edward Norton called Crowdrise.com. According to this article, Mr. Norton believes strongly in "marrying technology and philanthropy", and aims to convert the younger generation of donors to online giving.
Mr. Norton says that today, social networking offers "a new way of getting people together to create power in numbers...and more than that, it can help users express themselves through the causes they support."

As I've mentioned before, Parental Unit was chosen as one of 10 bloggers to be sponsored by Pedigree to attend the BlogPaws West conference to help promote their online blogging campaign benefitting dogs in shelters. Just scroll down a bit and you can read the several recent posts Parental Unit and I have written about their campaign. (Hey, forgive the repetition, but I'm proud of the old gal!) Well, it seems to me that Pedigree, the BlogPaws team, and the hundreds of bloggers that are participating in Pedigree's "Write a Post, Feed a Dog" campaign are doing just that: getting together through social media to raise, in this case, donations of dog food to shelters that are in desperate need in these difficult economic times.

So where does the dancing dog come in? On You-Tube of course! You-Tube has for many years been a beloved social media tool and a force for...well, at least entertainment, and this video, which so far has garnered several million hits, is no exception. Parental Unit promised me that if I put up this video, she would never put any kind of costume on me or teach me to dance! While this isn't exactly the kind of gallant, human-dog partnership I imagine, it sure is entertaining-and this beautiful Golden Retriever really can dance, dance, dance!

Enjoy it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc9xq-TVyH

And, fellow bloggers, you've still got time to sign up for the Pedigree BlogHop and to write that post!

Meanwhile, I'm getting on the phone to my agent-I need some You-Tube exposure.

Hi Bocci - I saw this video a couple of weeks ago & to be perfectly honest, I didn't like it. First of all, I hate it when people try to turn their dogs into little people... the poor dog in the video is wearing a skirt and then "danced" on 2 legs for a very, very long time. I found it painful to watch... I won't call it abusive, but the thought crossed my mind.

Yep, Tank, I thought about those things too, before I chose to post it. I was using it, in part, to show what we've done with social media-how it "rally the troops" for good, as well as just for what seems like alot of people see as entertainment. I also thought about whether that dog might get arthritis in later years! I wonder how long the dance actually took-the video was only 3 minutes and 9 seconds...
Will be interested to hear what other folks say... :-)
Thanks for your comment-hope your knee is on the mend!

Well, I generally discourage my muzzer from watching that type of thing. I consider it doggie porn. I do let her watch dog shows and agilities and lure coursings and stuff like that, as long as she understands that she should not expect me to participate. That said, earth dog events might be lots of fun. We are considering the options.

We thought the video was cute and very entertaining. If he didn't want to dance, he wouldn't have.

Love ya lots

I love that we're getting a conversation going here! My intent was to introduce the Dancing Dog You-Tube Video as part of the whole social media thing. But I'd love to hear all of your opinions about the dancing Golden Retriever-so comment away!

Thanks,
Bocci and his Parental Unit

Re: Maggie & Mitch's comment

Dogs want to please their owner/master and can be trained to do lots of different things... whether it's good for them or not. Think Pit Bull.
