Mugsy Was Mugged!

You all remember my Aunt Renee's dog, Mugsy, right? He's the tough little guy who made it through an abusive beginning (running wild in the woods and had to be caught in a trap, rehabilitated, and ended up as my Aunt, the pet photographer's, right hand man). Yep, that's the one.
See my previous post on Mugsy here: boccibeefs.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Well, just the other day, Mugsy was attacked by a Rottweiler whose owner had left their gate open. Aunt Renee and Mugsy were walking on one of their usual routes, and out of his yard and onto the sidewalk dashes the Rottweiler, growling and snapping and biting at Mugs! Aunt Renee tried to keep Mugsy away from the attack by turning Mugsy in circles on his leash and....well, screaming at the top of her lungs for the owner to get her dog under control. When the Rottie was finally back behind his gate, the owner agreed to exchange contact information. A bit later that evening, Mugsy was rushed to the emergency vet with a number of bleeding wounds.

See poor Mugsy below after wracking up a $450 vet bill...(footnote: the vet called the owner of the Rottie directly and she paid on the spot, as well she should :-) )

Mugsy, still in a stupor from pain medication

Here's what Parental Unit, Aunt Renee, Mugsy and I strongly recommend from this "teachable moment": If you choose to own what Cesar Millan refers to as a "powerful breed dog" you must take extra precautions to have that pooch under your control at all times-and that includes walking on a leash and making sure (like double and triple checking!) that your gates are closed and fences secure if your dog is left unattended.
And...all doggies need exercise commensurate with their breed and natural activity level, but most large and powerful breeds need a TON of daily exercise to drain their excess energy, and a long daily walk with their "pack leader" is a must!

Mugsy is now doing fine, but as we all know, it could have been much worse. So please, if your beloved dog is large enough to do some real damage to another pooch or human, (and even if it's not!), please have your four-legged best friend under your control at all times-Mugsy and I say thanks in advance for your effort-we're not the fightin' kind!

Oh Poor Mugsy!

Glad to hears that he is doing better now but what an awful thing for him and his mom to have to go through.

That is very good advice too, thanks for reminding all of us Bocci. :)

Ernie (Nanette's boy. French bulldog) is here on my desk reading all about the horrible adventure that Mugsy has had to endure and further more Ernie is very upset at seeing the gash on Mugsy's hind leg! Oh how dreadful. I'll bet Mugsy won't be able to do any tail wagging for awhile! We knew this neighbor lady who owned a sweet tiny Chichuahua who got growled at by a Rotty and was NEVER the same - those big old mean doggies need to practice PEACE! from Auntie Nanette & Little Ernie.

It is not a pretty picture, Nanettte and Little Ernie! Even poor Mugsy's tail got shaved, cause he had a bite underneath his tail that had to be treated...Oh my, it was nerve-wracking for all involved!

THanks for stoppin' by you two!

Good grief. We are so sorry that happened to Mugsy. We hope you Mugsy and everyone starts to feel much better. That is a great lesson to learn for everyone. Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

Moma felt sick to her stomach and couldn't really carefully read all of this post. We're hoping Mugsy is doing okay ... and we hope no one has nightmares (we might) or develops walk-phobias (we would). And we really hope the rottie's owner learned a very very important lesson.

If only Mugsy had not had to have been the subject of the lesson. It's so wrong. And we are so sorry.

Hi to all!
I'm Mugs....thanks for all your kind wishes. I feel much better, but the
bites are starting to heal and itch! Renee and I are not walking down
that particular street anymore. I heard her say she might start to carry pepper spray....she does not want to hurt any attacking dog, just drive them off. I say HURT them and defend me!
I'm embarassed to say this is my 3rd dog attack, well 4th if you count the bull mastiff at the dog park who turned into a snarling mass on top of me, yet when pulled off, left not a mark.....lots of drool and saliva tho. We were walking behind a school 2 years ago and there was a park nearby. I was on a leash and 2 off leash dobermans came
running towards us and the male attacked and bit me. Then, last year, a pit bull came dashing out of his house and you guessed it, bit me.
I'm starting to develop a complex.......

I hope the owners of the Rottie will be more careful.
Take care

Hey, thanks for droppin' by cousin Mugsy! Glad to hear you're feelin' better enough to write a post. Don't worry, I've been attacked a few times, myself-remember the 3-legged white German Shepherd dog? It's not a reflection on you, my pal, it's all about them... and their owners :-)
