4PAWS Provides Home For Abandoned Dogs In Malaysia

Photo by Julie McGuire, courtesy of The New York Times

"More like a dingy canine hotel than an animal shelter" is how photographer Julie McGuire described the 4PAWS Penang Animal Welfare Society in Malaysia. But this "halfway house" for abandoned or stray dogs shelters over 250 dogs at any one time—with pups coming and going as they're rescued or adopted. And the women who started it all, a retiree who moved from Germany to Malaysia in 2009, presides over the canines with motherly love.

This article in a recent New York Times includes an extensive slide show of the "canine hotel" by McGuire, who is working on a project titled "Hounds of Hope." What's most interesting to us is that no matter where in the world you live, there's always dogs and cats in dire need of help, and at least some humans willing to donate their time and money to provide that help.
